CLEARVILLE, Pa. – A Pennsylvania man was critically injured after the ATV he was operating crashed – rolling over and pinning him underneath Thursday evening in southern Bedford County, according to fire department officials.
The approximately 50-year-old male was riding an ATV in the area of 1144 Flintstone Creek Road in Southampton Township, Bedford County when he crashed, according to Flintstone Volunteer Fire Department Chief Steve Bowman.
Allegany County Department of Emergency Services personnel stationed at Flintstone arrived on the scene first and requested a Maryland State Police - Aviation Command medevac be started because of their ability to deliver pre-hospital blood products and the possibility to hoist the injured male from the accident scene.
The Allegany County Joint Communications received the request for Allegany County units from the Bedford County 911 Center just after 8 p.m. Thursday, according to a Joint Communications Center spokesperson.
The ambulances and fire apparatus had to park along Flintstone Creek Road and walk back a short distance, crossing a creek to the patient, Bowman said.
An ATV, capable of transporting a patient was requested from Flintstone, however, a bystander with a Jeep assisted EMS and fire personnel with transporting the patient out to the awaiting ambulance, Bowman added.
Units from Flintstone and Baltimore Pike volunteer fire departments and a second ambulance from Flintstone responded to the crash.
Firefighters from Baltimore Pike established a landing zone just north of the crash scene.
The victim was transported by ambulance to rendezvous with Trooper 5, who transported him to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, a level one trauma center.
The victim’s current condition is not known.
