Today, Lieutenant Kalp and Lieutenant Adams attended Standard Response Protocol (SRP) training alongside local school personnel and Board of Education representatives. The training, presented by the I Love U Guys Foundation, focused on best practices for preparing for and responding to both violent and nonviolent incidents in our schools.

This nationally recognized program provides a common language and coordinated approach for students, staff, first responders, and the community during emergencies. We appreciate the opportunity to strengthen our partnerships with our schools and continue working together to keep our students and staff safe.

Cumberland Fire Department personnel have had the opportunity to provide Emergency Medical Services standby in association with the television series Medical Cadre for the past three days as they transformed our location into Western Michigan. It has been a unique experience for us and we look forward to the upcoming season of the Mayor of Kingstown airing this coming Fall 2026.

The Cumberland Fire Department Academy continues this month as recruits move through the EMT portion of their training. This week, students had the opportunity to visit Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 5 and the Allegany County 911 Center as part of the course curriculum.

These visits gave recruits a behind-the-scenes look at emergency communications, helicopter EMS operations, and the teamwork involved in managing emergencies from dispatch to patient care and transport. Experiences like these help prepare our future firefighters and EMTs for the many aspects of emergency services.

Great job by the recruits as they continue working hard through the academy!

Improving Outcomes, Together
Every EMS clinician carries one call with them forever, not for its heroism but for its humanity. A child whose breathing finally stabilized, a grandmother whose hand was held until her family reached her side, or a stranger who, despite fear and pain in their eyes, chose to trust them.
These moments seldom make headlines, yet they influence outcomes and change lives. These outcomes go beyond just vital signs. They include people returning home, families remaining united and communities feeling safer because someone was there when it mattered most.
Today’s EMS clinicians bring advanced skills and innovative tools to these moments: evolving models of care that serve patients in big cities, tribal lands, rural plains and everywhere in between: prehospital ultrasound, early stroke recognition, and whole blood transfusion. These advancements are creating a measurable difference well before the patient reaches the hospital.
Improving Outcomes, Together extends beyond medicine. It’s a collective responsibility that involves investing in the people behind the care with fair pay, safe staffing levels, mental health resources, leadership that listens and acts, and opportunities for professional growth.
This week, we recognize the people behind the patch and reaffirm our commitment, as partners and communities, to Improving Outcomes, Together.

After 29 years of dedicated service, the Cumberland Fire Department recognizes the retirement of Lt. Jeff DeHaven.

Lt. DeHaven’s official retirement date was May 1st. Over the course of his career as a Fire Lieutenant/Paramedic, he served the City of Cumberland with professionalism, commitment, and a steady presence both on and off the fireground. Whether responding to emergencies, mentoring younger members, or handling the day-to-day responsibilities of the job, Jeff was someone his coworkers could count on.

A lifelong member of this community, Jeff’s connection to Cumberland runs deep. For nearly three decades, he answered the call—serving the citizens with pride and helping shape the department through his experience and dedication. His impact can be seen not only in the work he’s done, but in the people he’s worked alongside.

We thank Lt. DeHaven for his years of service to the citizens of Cumberland and for the many contributions he made to this department. Please join us in congratulating him and wishing him the very best in his well-earned retirement.
