MYTH vs. FACT: Sudden Cardiac Arrest ⚡❤️

🚫 Myth: Only professionals can help in sudden cardiac arrest.

✅ Fact: Doing something is always better than doing nothing. Calling 911, starting hands-only CPR, and using an AED—devices designed for everyday people—can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival. An AED will guide you step by step and only deliver a shock if it’s needed.

You don’t have to be a medical professional to save a life.
Ordinary people save lives every day. 💪

Allegany County Department of Emergency Services EMS Lieutenant Joshua Bosley and Paramedic/Firefighter Jenna Helmstetter participated in supporting the Maryland Resuscitation Academy over the last two days. The Maryland RA is a focused, two-day program designed to strengthen survival rates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. It brings together Medical Directors, Fire/EMS Chiefs, EMS supervisors, providers of all levels, communications center supervisors and dispatchers, and hospital staff from across Maryland and neighboring states.

Built on the curriculum of the world-renowned Resuscitation Academy in Seattle, Washington, the Maryland RA is co-sponsored by Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, MIEMSS, and the Heart Rescue Project. Allegany County has sent representatives from ACDES and the Allegany County Joint Communications Center for many years to help bring evidence-based practices home and continue improving how we respond to cardiac arrest.

Interested in attending? The next Maryland Spring RA will be held May 19–20, 2026, and the Fall Maryland RA will take place October 14–15, 2026.

⚡️ Myth vs. Fact ⚡️

Myth: Waiting for emergency responders is enough when someone collapses from sudden cardiac arrest.

Fact: Every minute without CPR or defibrillation reduces a person’s chance of survival by 7–10%. Immediate action — calling 911, starting CPR, and using an AED — can make the difference between life and death. ❤️

Every second counts. Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere — on a sidewalk, at work, at the gym and at home. But here’s the powerful truth: Using an AED before emergency services arrive can mean the difference between life and death.

Did you know?

Nearly 70% of sudden cardiac arrests happen at home—yet less than half of those victims receive CPR from a bystander.

That means if someone goes into cardiac arrest, it’s likely to be someone you know and love. Their survival could depend on YOU.

⚡ Shocking Survival Stats: Why Early AED Use Matters Most

We know this is obvious but don't you want to hear about a study with 66,000+ patients?

This massive nationwide study confirms what we already know—and what we can’t afford to ignore: bystander AED use drastically improves survival from cardiac arrest, especially when EMS is delayed.

🧠 Background:Early defibrillation is critical in shockable cardiac arrest. But how does bystander AED use hold up when EMS takes longer to arrive?

📊 The Study:
• 66,000+ patients with witnessed shockable OHCA
• Compared survival and neurologic outcomes by:
- Bystander AED use vs. none
- EMS response time (8 min)
• Nationwide registry from Japan

📌 Key Findings:
• Survival with good neurologic outcome:
- 57.7% with AED use if EMS 8 min
• Without AED use, survival dropped across all time frames
• Benefit of AED use most pronounced when EMS delayed
• Time from collapse to shock is the key determinant of survival

✅ Takeaways for EMS & Hospitals:
• AED placement must target high-traffic + EMS-delayed areas
• Public CPR training isn’t enough—AED access and use must be a focus
• Hospitals: reinforce AED messaging in community outreach
• EMS: highlight AED use in survivor stories to build trust & action

🔎 Did You Know?

Only about 10% of people who experience sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital will survive.

That’s a heartbreaking statistic—but it’s one we can change. 💔➡️❤️

The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation is on a mission to raise awareness, empower bystanders, and support life-saving initiatives like CPR training and public access to defibrillators (AEDs).

Together, we can help turn bystanders into heroes—and save more lives. Sign up to be a H.E.A.R.T. Champion and help raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest in your community!
