We have been monitoring the new all-way stop at Main Street (Route 9) and Greely Road. Between 7:00 AM and 8:30 AM, 15 vehicles were stopped for flagrant stop sign violations. 😬

Cumberland Public Works has added temporary supplemental signage to help everyone build a little “muscle memory.” Big thanks to them for jumping in quickly to help keep this intersection safe. With that said…

🛑 Please come to a complete stop at stop signs.
↔️ Use your blinkers — they reduce confusion at all-way stops.
🏁 Please obey posted speed limits.
👀 Eyes on the road!

This new traffic pattern begins TOMORROW!

🛑A NEW 4-WAY STOP is coming to Greely Road/Greely Road Ext. and Main Street starting Thursday August 13th! 🛑

As Part of the MSAD #51 School Construction Project and to comply with the MaineDOT requirements (noted in the MSAD’s MaineDOT Traffic Movement Permit), the intersection of Main Street and Greely Road/Greely Road Ext. will become a 4-way stop. This change addresses safety concerns that have been brought to the Town and MaineDOT to make the intersection safer for vehicle traffic, bicycles, and pedestrians.

🚨 NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN: ALL-WAY STOP AT MIDDLE ROAD & TUTTLE ROAD 🚨

Please be aware that the intersection of Middle Road and Tuttle Road has been converted to an ALL-WAY STOP.

This change took effect last night and includes:
🛑 New stop signs on all approaches
⚠️ “New Traffic Pattern Ahead” warning signs
💡 Flashing LED stop signs and advance warning signs
🎨 New “STOP AHEAD” pavement markings, “STOP” markings, and stop lines on the roadway

Despite these additional warning devices and pavement markings, officers have already observed several drivers approaching on Tuttle Road who failed to stop completely, including rolling (“Hollywood”) stops.

This intersection has a history of serious crashes, and these improvements were made to increase safety for everyone who travels through the area.

Please help make this transition a safe one:
✔️ Slow down as you approach the intersection.
✔️ Expect traffic to be stopping from every direction.
✔️ Come to a complete stop behind the stop line.
✔️ Tell the others: please share this post with friends, family, and neighbors who travel through the area.

For the next several weeks, officers will be paying close attention to compliance at this intersection. Our goal is education and safety, but drivers who fail to obey the new traffic control devices may be subject to enforcement.

A few extra seconds at a stop sign are worth preventing the next crash.

The members of the Cumberland Police Department extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow Game Wardens of the Maine Warden Service following today’s tragic line-of-duty loss in Avon.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. Maine’s law enforcement and first responder community mourns alongside you.

We are heartbroken to share that a Maine Game Warden died this morning following a plane crash in Avon, near Schoolhouse Pond. The crash occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m.

This is a devastating loss for the Maine Warden Service, our Department, and the people of Maine. Our thoughts are with the family, loved ones, colleagues, and all those impacted by this tragedy.

We will share additional information as it becomes available.

The MSAD51 emergency alerting system was activated this afternoon for a minor situation that did not require a full emergency response. SRO Clukey arrived in the area in less than a minute and provided us with updated information. There was no intruder or threat to campus.
