I was born in Sta Clara VC. CUBA, where family was the beginning of everything. There were no dramas because situations were nipped in the bud ... and a clean slate.
If you behaved badly, they gave you a flip-flop (or several, hahaha). Children did not argue with their parents, parents were the law.
The cousins were your brothers and the classmates your cousins, the teachers were role models and they were not disrespected.
They taught me to say hello, to say goodbye, to say thank you and to ask for permission and uuuyyyy to understand the language of the eyes!
We went out to play with the neighbors on the block (the neighbors from before) all together, it was quite an adventure, we made "excursions" to nearby places or we played ball, spinning tops, marbles, or we played burned,, 50 to the stick, jump rope, hairline, or at home to food, cuquitas, ludo, checkers, monopoly, chess ...
We ate what our mothers cooked and POINT! We ate rice with chicken, tostones, plantains in temptation, liver steak, lentils, chicken with french fries, ajiaco, tamale casserole, cabbage rolls, sweets and homemade jams were not lacking. Also the granita, the mangoes, the roasted peanuts and the guarapo when leaving school !!!!
We could walk up and down or we would ride our bikes or rollerblades and go to a friend's neighbor's house.
We were not afraid of anything and we respected our elders. We were taught respect for others and for the property of others.
As a child, it was not spoken if an adult was speaking. If anyone had a fight, it was a fist fight. We children did not have weapons when we grew up, except stick revolvers or caps to play cowboy!
At carnival we would go behind the troupes with our friends and there was no problem. How we enjoyed !!! And not to mention the walks with the parents!
When it got dark we knew it was time to go in, with a whistle or shout from our moms, We loved going to school because we had love, affection and respect for the teachers and we had the joy of seeing our classmates who today are our greatest friends!! .... and no one disrespected a teacher!
We got to know our surroundings from the mouths of our elders, we listened to stories and advice because we knew that if we disrespected an adult, they would give us a spanking, a strap on, a smack or Mom's flying flip-flop.
When a plane passed, all the children would go out to see him and shout at the top of our voice: Adiosssss Goodbyessss "Hehehehehe ... Not to mention bathing in a downpour, in the jets !! that was pure fun. And we had to go out to bathing in the first downpour of May, that was mandatory.
We would go into our neighbors' house and the mother would give us all food, no one would take anything without permission and there was not so much disorder because they would always pick us up. We knew everyone on the block and everyone kept an eye on us.
When someone from the neighborhood group was called to sleep, they all went home.
I would like that my granddaughters, children of my friends, all could have the fortune of living so healthy and happy!
How I wish we could revive those values because we are losing our children in a society without respect for authority, compassion and sensitivity for others.
