Statement from the Heart of LA Democratic Club
The Heart of LA Democratic Club condemns, in the strongest possible terms, President Trump's statement about Los Angeles and San Diego. Speaking at a rally in Nebraska on Monday night, he said: "Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego. It's a small price to pay."
And the crowd cheered.
The President of the United States said it would be acceptable for a foreign adversary to destroy two American cities, at the heart of counties that are home to 13 million people. That is more than six times the population of the entire state where he said it. That is not a small price. Those are our families, our neighbors, and our communities.
No amount of White House spin can undo what Americans heard. We take the President at his word, and his word is that our lives are an acceptable cost of his unpopular and illegal war with Iran.
As a feminist Democratic club, we know that the costs of war fall hardest on women, children, and caregivers. We will not stay quiet while our communities are treated as disposable.
Keeping every American safe, in every city and every state, is the first duty of the presidency. These remarks abandon it.
And the harm doesn't stop at his words. Under this President, families are paying more for groceries, rent, gas, and everything in between, while he fills his own coffers and makes the wealthiest Americans even richer. At the same time, he is working to strip basic medical coverage from the people who can least afford to lose it. Working families are being asked to pay for his war, his tax breaks for the rich, and his self-dealing, and now he tells us our lives are a small price to pay.
We have the power to change course. With 28 days until the midterm election, we urge everyone to act: check your registration, make your voting plan, volunteer, and talk to your friends and neighbors.
