Heart of LA Democratic Club mourns the loss of Gloria Steinem, a defining voice of the feminist movement whose courage and activism inspired generations of women.
Gloria Steinem helped change what women believed was possible. For more than six decades, she fought for equality, reproductive freedom, political and economic power, and the right of women to determine the course of our own lives.
Gloria came of age in an America where a woman could be denied a credit card or mortgage in her own name simply because she was a woman. She helped lead a movement that demanded something revolutionary in its simplicity: that women be able to control our own lives.
As a journalist, activist, organizer, and co-founder of Ms. magazine, she helped bring womenโs experiences out of the shadows and into our politics, our workplaces, our laws, and our national conversation. She helped make feminism a mainstream political and cultural movement in the United States during the second-wave feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s, speaking up when women were too often expected to stay quiet and helping make space for millions of women to speak for themselves.
As a feminist Democratic club, we owe a great deal to Gloria and the women who came before us. Heart of LA was founded on the belief that women must have a voice and a seat at the table, and that equality requires participation, organizing, and political power.
More women today run for office, organize politically, lead movements, and claim their place in the decisions that shape our lives because generations of women demanded that right. Gloria Steinem helped open those doors and inspired women to walk through them. But the equality she spent her life fighting for has yet to be achieved. Women remain vastly underrepresented in positions of power, and some of the rights she fought decades to secure have been taken away or remain under threat.
We remember her with enormous gratitude for the life she lived, the barriers she helped break, and the generations of women she inspired to speak up, organize, vote, run, and lead.
Her work was not finished, and neither is ours.
We honor Gloria Steinem by continuing the work, using our voices, exercising our political power, and fighting for the equality she spent her life advancing.
