Today is my birthday — May 30 — and as I gear up for my re-election campaign, I’m asking for one simple birthday gift: your support.

Together, we’ve fought for stronger schools, protected public education, expanded student supports, and kept our focus on what matters most: student success.

Now, I’m ready to continue the fight.

In the spirit of May 30, our team set a goal of reaching 30 contributions today — whether it’s $30, $300, $3,000, or any amount meaningful to you — to help power our campaign forward. Can you help by chipping in today?

Had a great time at Taste of Culver City on Sunday. Thank you to our community and the co-chairs for showing up in such a strong way for our schools.

The Education Foundation plays a critical role in working alongside the district to fund what matters most to our students and families. That partnership is especially important right now as schools face ongoing cuts at the state and federal levels.

Grateful to all the sponsors and attendees who made the event possible, and a special thank you to Wendy, the Foundation’s Executive Director, for organizing a great event.

Had a great time debating 7th grader Jerome on Thursday.

Our CCMS Debate Team took on Culver City elected officials for a night of fun, laughs, and a great cause—raising funds to help send these students to the National Speech & Debate Association National Tournament in Richmond this June.

You can still support. All funds are tax-deductible and 100% go directly to our students: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/nsda-nationals

The Village Well is also generously donating 20% of all sales that night and from April 30–May 3 with code SPEECH to support the team.

At Tuesdays board meeting, I voted no on the proposed staff reductions because there was no clear plan for how these responsibilities would be absorbed, and I was particularly concerned about the reduction of mental health counselors.

Make no mistake — I know we need to right-size the district and balance the budget. But those cuts should come as far away from the classroom as possible and should not interfere with the deeply important intervention work our mental health counselors provide.

Right now, we’re looking at these positions through a short-term OPEX lens — operating expenses on this year’s balance sheet. But the real question is the delta if we remove them.

That delta won’t be neutral. We should expect increases in absenteeism, behavioral incidents, classroom disruption, and crisis intervention. Cutting counselors may reduce OPEX this year, but the delta in student outcomes and operational strain will cost the district far more over time.

Honored to give opening remarks at the Westside Mayors Forum at the , where more than 100 community members came together for a powerful conversation about how we move from compassion to action in addressing homelessness.

Housing affordability is not just a housing issue. It is deeply connected to our schools and our students. When families cannot afford stable housing, students experience disruption, instability, and barriers to learning. If we are serious about improving educational outcomes, we must also be serious about housing stability.

Grateful to Mayor Caroline Torosis , Mayor Freddy Puza , and Mayor John Heilman for their leadership, and to St. Joseph Center and CEO Dr. Ryan J. Smith for convening and moderating such an honest and important dialogue. Thank you to everyone who showed up ready to engage in solutions.
