Culpeper Police Investigate Non-Fatal Malicious Wounding

On 9/5/26 at approximately 8:16AM Culpeper PD officers and Emergency Medical Services responded to a residence in the 2000-blk of Forsythia Dr for an adult male with stab wounds. According to the caller, the suspect had fled the scene in a vehicle.

The victim was located inside the residence with critical injuries. Officers performed life-saving measures until medical services arrived. He was transported to a regional hospital with potential life-threatening injuries and is currently in stable condition.

Culpeper PD detectives arrived at the residence to collect evidence and investigate. Deputies with the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office provided assistance as law enforcement searched for the suspect.

Robert Issac Cantos, 32, of Culpeper was charged with Malicious Wounding, Breaking and Entering with Intent to Commit a Felony, Destruction of Property, and Trespassing. He was seen by a magistrate and held without bond at the Culpeper Jail.

Based on the preliminary investigation, Cantos and the victim are known to each other. This appears to have been an isolated domestic related incident. Cantos went to that residence deliberately looking for both the victim and another individual. When Cantos confronted the other individual, he saw the victim inside. Cantos forced his way into the residence, attacked the victim with an available weapon, then fled the area.

On Friday, 08/21/2026, at approximately 9:47 PM, the Culpeper Police Department responded to a shooting in the 500 Blk of James Madison Hwy. A motorist reported that they heard gun shots and one of the bullets stuck their car. Officers on scene observed that one of the car windows was shattered and a bullet hole was on the door frame.

Through the combination of Flock license plate readers and video cameras, Detectives were able to identify multiple witnesses and additional victims. After several days of investigating, detectives identified multiple eye witnesses and an additional vehicle that was struck by bullets.

Following the examination of physical evidence, available video and photographic evidence, and the solicitation of eye witness statements, it was determined that the shooting was the result of a physical altercation between young adults on Highview Ct.

As a result of the detectives’ findings, the Culpeper Police Department has charged Tyrek Xavier Smith, 19, of Culpeper, with the following:

2x counts of felony malicious shooting
2x counts of felony malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle
1x count of misdemeanor concealed weapon violation
2x counts of misdemeanor reckless handling of a firearm
2x counts of misdemeanor shooting across a roadway

"Violent crime of this nature will not be tolerated in our community. We will continue to use technology responsibly as an investigative tool, paired with sound police work, to hold violent offenders accountable and keep our citizens safe. We are grateful that no one was injured as a result of this gunfire,” said Chief Chris Settle.
