On June 9, 1964, more than 500 Black men, women, and children sought refuge inside First African Baptist Church. What followed became known as Bloody Tuesday; the largest assault on and invasion of a Black church by law enforcement during the Civil Rights Movement.
This Sunday, the Tuscaloosa Bloody Tuesday Organization will gather at Beulah Baptist Church at 3:00 PM to honor the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of those who endured that day and helped move the struggle for justice forward.
The survivors have left us with a powerful truth:
“The memory you choose. That’s who you are.”
We choose to remember. We choose to honor those who stood firm in the face of hatred and violence. We choose to carry their legacy in our hearts and pass their stories to future generations.
Their courage still calls us forward. Their sacrifice still challenges us to build a more just and compassionate world.
As we remember the past, we renew our commitment to the future—until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream. See you Sunday.
