A Story Worth Sharing

Local resident Melanda Jones is giving well-deserved recognition to Officer Jeff David for an act of kindness that didn't go unnoticed.

Jones, who works at Waffle House on Highway 157, said she witnessed David help a homeless, elderly woman who had been released from the hospital and was walking along the road last week.

"He brought her in so she could eat and have a place to rest while he was on duty and looking for a shelter for placement," Jones said. "Later that night he came back to transport her to a facility in Huntsville where he'd found her a bed and offered to cover her bill which had already been taken care of."

Jones praised David's character: "You're a good man. We need more officers like you. Y'all don't get the credit y'all deserve."

It's easy to focus on headlines, but sometimes the stories that matter most are the quiet acts of compassion that happen when nobody is looking.

Congratulations to Sgt. Todd Craig on 25 years of dedicated service with the Cullman Police Department.

Throughout his career, Sgt. Craig has faithfully served the citizens of Cullman with professionalism, leadership, and commitment. He currently serves as the School Resource Officer Supervisor, where he helps oversee the department’s SRO program and works closely to ensure the safety and security of our schools. In addition, Sgt. Craig coordinates and schedules all off-duty jobs for the department.

His hard work, experience, and dedication make him a tremendous asset to the Cullman Police Department, and we are grateful for his continued service to our community.

Chief Joey Duncan, Assistant Chief Brandon Patterson, Sheriff-elect Chad Whaley, Captain Rex Sorrow, and dozens of law enforcement professionals and supporters gathered in downtown Huntsville early Friday morning for the Alabama Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting Alabama Special Olympics.

The annual Torch Run raises awareness and support for Special Olympics athletes across Alabama while bringing agencies and communities together through the “Flame of Hope.” This year’s run began in Huntsville and will continue across the state before ending at the Summer Games in Troy.

Proud to stand alongside local, state, and federal partners in support of these incredible athletes and the mission of Alabama Special Olympics!

This past weekend, the Cullman Police Department received reports of individuals attempting to kick in doors at residences within the city. Thankfully, no entry was made into any of the homes, but one residence did sustain property damage during the incidents.

Investigator Max Bartlett quickly identified all parties involved. The individuals consisted of one adult driver and several juveniles who admitted they were participating in what they described as a “prank.” After speaking with law enforcement, the victim chose to allow restitution for the damages in lieu of criminal prosecution.

The Cullman Police Department wants to make it very clear: this is not a harmless prank. Attempting to kick in someone’s door can have serious consequences, both physically and criminally.

Homeowners have the right to defend themselves, their families, and their property when they believe someone is attempting to unlawfully enter their residence. These situations can escalate quickly and could result in serious injury or even death.

In addition, individuals involved in these acts can face criminal charges including Criminal Mischief, Attempted Burglary, Reckless Endangerment, and other related offenses. Parents could also face criminal charges and financial responsibility for damages caused by juveniles.

We strongly encourage parents to speak with their children about the dangers and consequences of participating in social media trends or “pranks” that put lives and property at risk. What may seem funny for a few seconds can lead to devastating lifelong consequences.

The Cullman Police Department has received reports of an ongoing phone scam involving individuals posing as law enforcement officers.

Scammers are using the names of actual police officers and claiming that the victim has an active warrant due to:
• Unpaid fines
• Traffic violations
• Missed jury duty
• Contempt of court

Victims are then sent a link to view what appears to be an official court document. The document is fake and is designed to pressure individuals into immediately paying fines or fees electronically. In many cases, the scammers also instruct victims not to go onto government property or contact local authorities, claiming they will be arrested if they do.

PLEASE REMEMBER:
• The Cullman Police Department will NEVER demand payment over the phone.
• Law enforcement will NEVER ask for payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, payment apps, or suspicious links.
• Official warrants are not handled by phone calls demanding immediate payment.
• Do not click on suspicious links or provide personal or financial information.

If you receive one of these calls:
✔ Hang up immediately
✔ Do not send money
✔ Do not click any links
✔ Contact the Cullman Police Department directly using an official phone number to verify any claims

Please share this information with family and friends, especially elderly relatives who are often targeted by these scams.

This morning, officers with the Cullman Police Department joined firefighters from Cullman Fire Rescue for the 2nd Annual Memorial Day Tribute “Murph” workout hosted by Cullman Fire Rescue.

The “Murph” is more than just a workout, it is a tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country and communities.

We are honored to stand alongside Cullman Fire Rescue as we remember the fallen and pay tribute to those who gave everything for our freedom. Thank you to Cullman Fire Rescue for hosting this meaningful event.

This Memorial Day, the Cullman Police Department honors and remembers the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy every day, and their legacy will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and remember those who paid the ultimate price for our nation.

The Cullman Police Department would like to extend a huge thank you to SR4 Realty for hosting a wonderful First Responders Lunch this afternoon in appreciation of our local emergency personnel. Events like this mean so much to the men and women who serve our community every day, and we are truly grateful for the kindness, generosity, and support shown to all of our first responders.

We would also like to give a special thank you to Dr. Lovelady and the staff at Lovelady Chiropractic for providing free chiropractic adjustments for our first responders. The physical and mental demands placed on emergency personnel can be challenging, and acts of care and appreciation like this go a long way in supporting those who dedicate their lives to serving others.
