We are currently experiencing an increase in fire activity across Cullman County due to the extremely dry conditions. We strongly urge all residents to use caution and if possible, avoid any outdoor burning at this time.

Multiple active fires are ongoing throughout the county, and conditions remain favorable for rapid fire spread. We recommend postponing any burning until conditions improve.

Fire Danger Advisory DEFINITION- Issued by the Alabama Forestry Commission
When extremely dry weather conditions and low humidity combine to create an atmosphere favorable for wildfires, the Alabama Forestry Commission urges everyone to delay outdoor burning until conditions improve if at all possible.
Fire Danger Advisory Issued by the AFC
As drought conditions worsen, due to the recent lack of precipitation and high temperatures, the Alabama Forestry Commission is issuing a Statewide Fire Danger Advisory. Until the state receives sufficient rainfall to alleviate the severe dry situation, especially in central Alabama, this elevated fire danger will persist for the foreseeable future.
Mitigation measures should be considered to protect lives and property from wildfire damage. If possible, refrain from burning until fire danger has diminished. Always obtain a permit for prescribed burns, and ensure adequate equipment and personnel are present. Never leave a fire until it is safely extinguished. Conduct post-burn patrols for several days to ensure that reignition has not occurred and firebreaks have not been compromised. In residential areas, be sure to have a water hose prepared and adjacent to the burning area. After burning debris piles, it is necessary to thoroughly soak the area until cold.
As this advisory continues and potentially escalates, it is essential to maintain situational awareness. Burning debris piles can continue to smolder for multiple days, eventually spreading out of a previously contained area. Under these critically dry conditions, chances of embers igniting outside of the main burn area are increased. Fires in areas with deep duff (layers of decaying vegetable matter covering the ground under trees) can also continue to burn for extended periods of time, potentially causing tree mortality. Driving vehicles into tall grasses, as well as equipment use such as bush-hogging, hay baling, or mulching, can spark ignition.
The Alabama Forestry Commission will continue to monitor the strengthening drought and wildfire statistics across the state. The agency will evaluate if further restrictions are needed in the coming weeks.

The rules for the Cullman County Emergency Management Agency shelters are:

No pets. Only service animals for the disabled are allowed in the shelter.
No smoking. Smoking is not allowed inside the shelter.
No alcohol. Consumption of alcohol is not allowed in or around the shelter.
No drugs. Use of “recreational drugs” is not allowed in or around the shelter.
No fi****ms or weapons of any kind are allowed in shelters.
These rules are strictly enforced for each of the shelters on the list. Other rules, specific to each shelter, may be in place and shall be followed.

Shelters will be opened during a Tornado Watch and/or a Tornado Warning. The shelters will be closed as soon as the danger has passed, and the watch has been canceled by the National Weather Service or allowed to expire.

**It is highly recommended that those seeking shelter in the City of Cullman use the Community Shelter on Sportsman Lake Road across from the Cullman County Fairgrounds or the basement at the Beech Center. One pod at the shelter on Sportsman Lake Road has been designated for owners with small pets who are in carriers.

Become familiar with shelters located nearest your home. Monitor weather conditions and remain alert for sudden changes.

Emergency Services: If you need to call for help, knowing your precise location allows emergency responders to reach you more quickly. GPS coordinates or an address can make all the difference in critical situations.

Understanding Risk Areas: Different areas can be affected in various ways during bad weather. Knowing your location helps you assess if you're in an area prone to flooding, landslides, or high winds, and helps you make better decisions about whether to stay put or evacuate.

Access to Resources: Knowing where you are can also help you find nearby shelters, hospitals, or places with essential supplies in case you're stranded or cut off from regular services.

Communication: If you’re in contact with others during the event (friends, family, or authorities), being able to clearly describe where you are can prevent confusion and speed up response time.

In short, knowing your location during a weather event improves your ability to act quickly and safely, reducing the risk of harm.
