MYTH: You should hang up if you accidentally call 911.

FACT: Stay on the line and let the telecommunicator know it was accidental.

Accidental 911 calls happen, but hanging up can create confusion and may result in a callback or dispatch to confirm your safety.

If you call 911 by mistake, the best thing you can do is stay on the line and clearly communicate that there is no emergency.

Meet Ashley!
Ashley has been a part of Cullman City Communications since June 2024. Ashley got into dispatching while in college pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. During high-stress calls, Ashley stays calm by reminding herself that the person on the other end of the line is often experiencing one of the worst moments of their life and is reaching out for help. One of the biggest challenges she faces is the unpredictability of each shift--never knowing how many calls will come in or how serious they will be. She wants the public to understand that telecommunicators also carry emotional weight, even though they don't respond on scene. They hear heartbreaking moments such as parents panicking as their child struggles to breathe, or someone discovering a loved one has passed. They provide life-saving instructions like CPR over the phone, yet rarely ever get closure or learn the outcome. Despite these challenges, Ashley remains deeply passionate about her work.

Meet Emily!
Emily joined our team in December 2025, looking for a career where she could truly make a difference by helping people, staying challenged, and being a part of something bigger. She stays focused, keeps a calm tone, and relies on her training even when talking to people on what could be the worst day of their lives. She wants the public to understand how fast-paced and complex this job is at times. Telecommunicators are often managing multiple calls, radios and systems all at once while gathering and relaying critical information to responders before arriving on scene.

Jheny es una de nuestras despachadoras de emergencia para 911 en Cullman City Communications más nuevas y ha sido parte de nuestro equipo desde Marzo de esta año. Ha sido bendecida con la capacidad de hablar inglés y español con fluidez y siempre ha estado interesada en este campo profesional. Cuando surgió la oportunidad de aplicar y ayudar a nuestra creciente comunidad Hispana, no dudó en hacerlo. La parte más desafiante de su trabajo es tomar decisiones constantemente que pueden afectar la vida de las personas en tiempo real. Las llamadas pueden pasar de cuestión de segundos. Ella quiere que el público sepa que somos humanos como todos los demás, con la diferencia de que escuchamos a las personas en sus peores días, todos los días.

Meet Stevi, our night shift Supervisor!
Stevi has been with Cullman City Communications since August 2018! While pursuing a degree in criminal justice, she knew she wanted to make a difference and help people and didn’t hesitate to apply for dispatch when the opportunity presented itself! She stays calm during high stress calls by knowing that the person on the other end of the phone is relying on her to get them help, and remaining calm allows her to be in control of the call to appropriately assess the situation. One thing she wishes the public understood is that telecommunicators are people, too, and they are doing their best to help callers with the information they are providing.

Meet Jacob!
Jacob has been a part of our team since July 2025. He was inspired to become a telecommunicator so he could serve and support his community the best way he could! He wants the public to know that telecommunicators are here to help and the questions we ask are vital in getting the right assistance to you as quickly as possible. He shares that the most challenging part of his job is never knowing what type of call or situation will be on the other end of the line. However, the most rewarding part is helping ensure responders reach those in need.
