Training: SE Kings Bay Dr.

CRFD’s 3rd Quarter Training continues with VEIS (Vent, Enter, Isolate, Search) and vertical ventilation, including roof opening and ventilation operations.

These skills require constant training and plenty of repetitions to maintain proficiency. We would like to take a moment to thank the homeowner who graciously allowed our department to train in the structure prior to its demolition.

Opportunities like this don’t come often and provide our crews with valuable, real-world training in a controlled environment.

Following a safety briefing and walk-through, crews conducted multiple training evolutions without incident.

Train hard. Train safely. Stay ready.

🔥 KITCHEN FIRE | CRYSTAL RIVER

Citrus County Fire Rescue, with mutual aid assistance from the Crystal River Fire Department, responded Friday afternoon to a structure fire on W. Peach Ln., outside the Crystal River city limits.

Crews were dispatched at 12:17 p.m. and arrived to find smoke coming from the rear of the approximately 1,400-square-foot manufactured home. Firefighters located a fire involving food and grease on the stovetop that had extended to the microwave and ventilation area above the stove.

The homeowner reported that she had been cooking and stepped outside. After noticing smoke coming from a roof vent, she discovered the fire and attempted to extinguish it with water before safely evacuating with her dog.

Fortunately, the home's doors were closed when crews arrived, which helped limit the fire's growth and spread. Firefighters extinguished the remaining fire, checked for extension with a thermal imaging camera, ventilated the home and monitored atmospheric conditions before allowing the resident to return inside.

No injuries were reported.

Thank you to the Crystal River Fire Department, Chief 1 and Truck 1, for the mutual aid assistance and teamwork on scene as well as scene photos.

⚠️ COOKING SAFETY: Never use water on a grease fire—it can cause burning grease to splash and rapidly spread the flames. Stay in the kitchen when cooking with oil or grease. If a fire cannot be safely controlled, get everyone out, close the doors behind you, stay outside and call 911.

We continue to collect peanut butter donations for Citrus County Blessings.

HELP US NAME OUR NEW STATION MASCOT!

We’ve got a new member of the firehouse family and she’s already made herself right at home!

She’s tiny, fearless, and apparently has decided that the fire truck is her personal playground. Now she needs a name!

Drop your best name suggestions in the comments!
Bonus points for names inspired by firefighting, firehouse life, or her little tough-girl personality.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the suggestions and picking a name worthy of our newest station mascot!

Training: CRFD B-Shift firefighters worked on search techniques and maintaining survivable conditions for victims.

FF Koenig developed a training prop that allows our firefighters to visualize the temperatures and conditions encountered by located victims.

This prop helps firefighters better understand the environment, make informed decisions, and maintain proper victim handling throughout the removal to the exit.

Special thanks to Priority Fire Training for their assistance with the prop idea.

🔥 EARLY MORNING RV FIRE | CRYSTAL RIVER

Citrus County Fire Rescue responded early this morning to an RV fire on W. Wings Ln. outside the city limits of Crystal River.

Crews were dispatched at 12:29 a.m. and arrived at 12:36 a.m. to find a 30-foot RV fully involved in fire. A nearby home, approximately 25 feet away, was not involved, and all people were confirmed accounted for.

Firefighters quickly began a defensive attack, with water on the fire at 12:38 a.m. The fire was brought under control at 12:41 a.m. Crews remained on scene conducting searches, overhaul and checking for any remaining hazards.

Sadly, during a search of the RV, firefighters located a bird that did not survive the fire. The bird was removed and returned to its owner.

The owner advised firefighters that the RV had been parked for several years and was not being used as a residence. However, it remained connected to electrical power, with a refrigerator and external air-conditioning unit operating to provide climate control for the bird. Based on the investigation at the scene, the fire was determined to be unintentional.

Thank you to the Crystal River Fire Department and Truck 1 for their mutual aid assistance and teamwork on scene, and to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office for their assistance during the incident.

🚒 CCFR units on scene: Battalion Chief 2 (Connell Heights), Engine 3 (Homosassa), Squad 7 (Connell Heights) and Captain 102 (Lecanto).

⚠️ FIRE SAFETY REMINDER: A vehicle, RV, shed or other space that remains connected to electricity can still present a fire risk even when it isn't regularly occupied. Periodically inspect electrical connections, cords and appliances, and disconnect equipment that does not need to remain energized. If a space is being used to shelter pets, make sure electrical equipment is properly maintained and working smoke alarms are present.

If a fire occurs, call 911 and tell responding firefighters immediately if a pet may be inside.
