Faces of D47: “I grew up in East Dundee and went to Concordia St. Paul in Minnesota, where I earned my Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education. I think I always knew I wanted to work with kids. I’ve always loved kids, and growing up, I had one teacher who was so instrumental in my life that I thought, ‘I want to be like her. I want to work with kids. I want them to know that they’re cared for and loved.’ So that’s why I did it.
"After college, I moved to Alaska! I lived there for 10 years and taught third grade for 7 years, was an Early Childhood Director for 2 years, and then a principal for 1 year. I earned my master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Administration while in Anchorage. I initially moved to Alaska because I wanted an adventure and a chance to see the world. I definitely have some fun stories, like when we had to cancel recess because of moose or bears on the playground, and I even had a moose come right up to my classroom window. Alaska is where I met my husband, and we still go back twice a year to visit his family."
"Once I became a mom, I knew we had to move closer to home. We came back to Illinois, and when my son was 12 months old, District 47 posted a permanent substitute position at Glacier Ridge PreK. I wanted to get involved in education down here, so I said yes. I did that for one year, was a Blended PreK Teacher for three years, and now I’m in my second year as a Learning Behavior Specialist (LBS1) Teacher."
"As an LBS1 Teacher, we push into the classrooms and work with kids who have IEPs and need functional and academic support. I really enjoy working with students who need additional support because it is so rewarding to see their growth. We had a student who came to us with no verbal communication, and now he can communicate his wants and needs, listen to others, and successfully follow classroom routines. Seeing that growth has been incredibly rewarding."
"I also truly love my job and the staff I work with. We have such a strong sense of teamwork at Glacier Ridge, and it feels like we are our own little unit of people who support, encourage, and care for one another." -Natalie Dean, LBS1 Teacher, Glacier Ridge PreK
