May is Invasive Species Awareness Month in Illinois. In recognition CLPD is spotlighting Dames Rocket (Hesperis matronalis), a showy plant often introduced in residential landscaping, which thrives primarily in woodland habitats but also open areas.

Dame’s rocket is native to parts of Europe and Asia. In the United States, absent natural controls such as disease and insects found in its home range, it can aggressively take over natural areas. Often displacing and outcompeting a significant amount of the native vegetation that indigenous species have adapted to depend on. Unlike the native Phlox, which has 5 petaled flowers, Dame’s Rocket has 4 petals and being in the mustard family, it develops seed pods that produce an impressive 20,000 to 30,000 seeds per plant.

For more information on Dame’s Rocket, its invasive potential and similar looking native alternatives such as Phlox that can be planted instead, see the following links:

The Crystal Lake Park District kindly reminds trail users in park natural areas to please use designated trails.

Doing so helps to:
• Limit confusing offshoot spurs in the trail system
• Limit exposure to hazards such as trips/slips/ticks
• Limit impacts to the ecology of the natural area such as compaction, slope erosion, trampling/disturbance of sensitive native vegetation and introduction of invasive plants
• Lower stress for wildlife seeking seclusion
• Limit trash dispersal in more remote areas
• Ensure that First Responders can locate and gain access to those in distress
Unauthorized trail creation by breaking brush away from a corridor, creates increasing stick piles on the corridor sides, does nothing to prevent re-growth of the corridor-side shrubs and introduces more sunlight that is likely to stimulate unchecked invasive shrub seedling growth, effectively making the invasive shrub problem worse in those areas.

Posted signage instructs users to 'Please Stay on Designated Trails'

Please remember also that the Red (VA Sternes’s Woods Trail), Aqua (Oak View Trail), Yellow (Fen View Trail) and Orange (Prairie View Trail) are designated to allow biking; the White (Kettle View Trail), Green (Moraine View Trail), Blue (Pond View Trail) and Brown (Savannah View Trail) are not.

Back in 1989, a Natural Areas Management Plan identified several small pockets of original dry-mesic prairie still surviving in Sterne’s Woods. Over time, however, invasive brush and shrubs grew in so thick that these prairies were barely recognizable.

Through ongoing restoration efforts, we’re bringing these special landscapes back.

In winter 2024, work began in the eastern portion of Area 1. At that time, only about one-tenth of an acre of prairie grasses and a few native flowers remained. Crews removed invasive brush, expanding the open prairie to nearly half an acre. After clearing, we planted additional native prairie seed to help jumpstart recovery.

In spring, follow-up brush control prevented invasive plants from returning, and in 2025, staff removed white sweet clover to give native plants room to thrive. Thanks to these efforts, the restored area is now filled with dense, vibrant native blooms.

Building on this success, restoration continues in 2026 with additional clearing on the south side of the moraine in Area 1. Work has also begun to restore western Area 5—bringing more of Sterne’s Woods back to life as native prairie.

Next time you walk through Sterne’s Woods, here’s the story behind it 🌳

What feels like a peaceful nature escape today began with one man’s deep love of land, trees, and community. Theodore Wesley “Ted” Sterne (1898–1981) started out as a railroad brakeman before building the successful Sterne Lumber Company in Crystal Lake—selling everything from lumber and millwork to bird baths, grass seed, and even advice for songbirds.

An avid hunter, fisherman, and conservationist, Sterne purchased more than 200 rolling, wooded acres between Terra Cotta Avenue and Hillside Road. After a devastating fire in 1955, he didn’t give up—he doubled down. By 1959, he celebrated a decade of reforestation with 600,000 trees planted, earning recognition as a designated Tree Farmer. His land became home to wildlife, fishing ponds, Christmas tree lanes, and community gatherings.

Beyond the woods, Sterne served Crystal Lake as a business owner, Lions Club member, parade sponsor, and Nunda Township Supervisor for 15 years.

Today, when you wander the trails of Sterne’s Woods Park, you’re walking through a living legacy—one rooted in resilience, stewardship, and a lifelong passion for nature. 🍃
