Have you dialed 911 on accident?

In 2019, the Outagamie County Communication Center received nearly 4400 911 hang up or 911 misdial calls in the City of Appleton.

For 911 hang up calls (no voice contact is had with the dispatcher), a police officer is generally assigned to check the area of the call if it is able to be located by the phone’s GPS or from prior police records with the number.

Misdial calls refer to a person acknowledging the call was a mistake by speaking with the dispatcher. These calls may result in an officer being sent, depending on the circumstances. All of these calls are preventable and result in emergency service personnel time spent.

A growing number of these calls, particularly misdial calls, are from smart watches and other smart tech.

We love hearing from all of you, but please take a moment to learn how your mobile device may be locked to prevent accidental emergency calls so we can better respond and serve you! If you happen to call by mistake please stay on the line so we can verify you are okay.
