The Crozet Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1910. CVFD has been serving the W
estern Albemarle community, as well as providing mutual aid support to our neighboring counties of Nelson and Augusta for just over a century. It’s this tradition of service and dedication to our community that continues to drive and motivate this company to protect and serve at our greatest capacity. The first fire station for the Crozet Volunteer Fire Dept was built on Crozet Ave in downtown Crozet, in 1930. The location is directly across from the present day Dairy Queen. Today, this building is occupied by the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad. In 1937, a brand new Seagrave pumper was purchased. That particular piece of apparatus is still kept by the department today. Our new station, now located on Three Notch'd Road, was built in 1985, remodeled in 2009. This station currently houses 3 Engines, 1 Tanker, 2 Brush Trucks, 1 Tower Ladder, 1 Utility Vehicle, and 3 Command Vehicles. In 1990, the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department was the first department in Albemarle County to have Class B foam on our engines to strengthen our firefighting abilities. In 1992, Crozet Fire integrated foam into their wildland firefighting by being the first department in Albemarle County to have Class A foam piped into a brush truck for more effective firefighting. The most current technological update was in 2003. Crozet Fire was the first department in Albemarle County to purchase a brand new Pierce Fire Engine with a Compressed Air and Foam (CAFS) system on board. Our history is very rich, as we are a community based department, and we take great pride in that. Crozet Fire serves over 25,000 citizens in Western Albemarle County, with a running area of approximately 184 square miles. We answer approximately 750-800 calls per year, ranging from basic public service calls, to structure fires, tactical rescues, wildland fire suppression, as well as providing support to our neighboring Western Albemarle Rescue Squad. We have a diverse and dedicated membership of more than 50 skilled volunteers that are willing and able to respond to calls at all hours of the day and night. In September 2020, the CVFD welcomed Albemarle County Fire Rescue career staff Monday - Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to assist with responding to our increasing call volume.
