Maryland's Ready, Set, GROW! Procurement Connections Expo comes to Howard County Government, in partnership with Howard County Executive Calvin Ball on October 21, 2026 and it is free!

If you run a small, minority-owned, women-owned, veteran-owned or disadvantaged business, you will meet state procurement officers face to face and learn how the Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), Small Business Reserve (SBR) and Veteran-Owned Small Business Enterprise (VSBE) programs position you to win state work. Federal certifications, including the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program, are on the agenda as well.

Speaker will include Comptroller of Maryland Brooke Lierman, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, Maryland Department of Social and Economic Mobility Secretary Walter Simmons, and more!

If your firm holds a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) certification in Maryland, it is being reevaluated. The same goes for Airport Concession DBE (ACDBE) firms.

On Thursday, September 17, Secretary Walter L. Simmons and Maryland Department of Transportation Chief Finance and Partnerships Officer Jaclyn Hartman speak on a webinar hosted by the Maryland Transportation Builders and Materials Association.

The October 2025 United States Department of Transportation rule ended the prior presumptions of social and economic disadvantage based on race and s*x. Firms must now individually demonstrate disadvantage, and existing certifications are subject to reevaluation.

This is a direct briefing for business owners: what changed, what your firm has to do, and how Maryland is working to keep contracting opportunities open for small businesses.

Twenty-five years ago today, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and United Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Sixty-nine of them were Marylanders.

Flags across our state fly at half-staff today. We remember the neighbors, coworkers, and family members Maryland lost, the first responders who ran toward the danger, and the families who have carried this day for a quarter century.

September 11 is also a National Day of Service and Remembrance. The people who answered that morning answered for strangers. That is the example worth carrying forward.

Maryland fresh food retailers can apply for a share of about $3.67 million in NourishMD grants starting September 22.

The NourishMD Grant Program, administered by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, supports grocery stores, corner stores, co-ops, farm stands and farmers markets that open, stay open, or expand in communities without a nearby source of fresh food.

Many of those businesses are the small, minority, women and veteran-owned retailers we work with every day. If you run one, or you know someone who does, take a look.

This opening represents more than a new business; it highlights the impact of Maryland’s Social Equity Program and the importance of ensuring that individuals and families historically excluded from the cannabis industry have meaningful pathways to ownership and long‑term success.

Today is Women's Equality Day, marking the certification of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920, which guaranteed American women the right to vote.

That fight for equality did not end at the ballot box. At the Department of Social and Economic Mobility (DoSEM), we carry it forward by helping women build ownership, wealth, and opportunity across Maryland.

The Maryland Department of Social and Economic Mobility proudly highlights the leadership of Tiffany Watts, our Human Resources Director, whose more than 25 years of service in Maryland State government reflect a career built on dedication, integrity, and a deep commitment to public service. Tiffany’s journey began in Baltimore through a Maryland State work‑study program at Mergenthaler Vocational‑Technical High School, an early experience that shaped her passion for serving Marylanders and supporting the State workforce.

Over the years, Tiffany has held progressively responsible HR roles across multiple State agencies, including the Comptroller of Maryland, the Department of Housing and Community Development, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Department of Service and Civic Innovation. Her expertise spans strategic human resources, talent acquisition, employee relations, workforce planning, performance management, and leadership development.
