‼️UPDATE: ‼️

The City is currently working with the Game and Fish Commission regarding this matter. We are asking citizens to please report if you have noticed an excessive amount of butterflies in the area.

If you have observed unusual butterfly activity, please let us know so the information can be reported and documented.

Public Safety Notice – Sick Raccoons in the Area

The Crossett Police Department and local animal control have recently received reports of raccoons displaying unusual behavior throughout the area.

One raccoon was sent off for testing and tested negative for rabies. According to Dr. White at Oak Tree Animal Hospital, the illness being observed is likely Canine Distemper Virus (CDV).

⚠️ Signs may include:
• Disorientation or wandering during daylight hours
• Lack of fear around people
• Difficulty walking or stumbling
• Nasal discharge or crusted eyes
• Tremors or seizures

⚠️ IMPORTANT:
Canine Distemper is extremely dangerous and highly contagious to dogs and other wildlife. Pet owners are strongly encouraged to ensure their animals are current on vaccinations and to keep pets away from raccoons or other wildlife acting strangely.

While CDV is not known to infect humans, children should NEVER approach, touch, feed, or attempt to help a sick or injured raccoon. Please keep children away from any wildlife displaying unusual behavior.

Citizens are urged to continue calling the Crossett Police Department when sick or unusually behaving raccoons are observed, and officers will respond and handle the safe removal of the animals.

If you see a raccoon or other animal acting strangely:
❌ Do NOT approach or attempt to handle the animal
❌ Keep children and pets away
📞 Contact the Crossett Police Department to report the location

We appreciate the public’s cooperation as we continue monitoring the situation and working to keep our community and pets safe.

Today, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Sarah Jones, Art Teacher at Crossett Junior High School, and to the talented students who participated in creating custom artistic renditions of the Crossett Police Department patch for display inside our department.

These students took great pride, creativity, and effort in designing artwork that represents not only our department, but the strong connection between our officers and the youth of our community. Their work will proudly be displayed throughout the hallways of the Crossett Police Department as a reminder of the partnership we share with our schools and community.

We are incredibly grateful for Mrs. Jones’ willingness to involve her students in this project and for encouraging creativity, community involvement, and civic pride.

To each student who participated, thank you for using your talents to make a difference and for helping brighten the halls of our department. We are proud to display your work for everyone who walks through our doors to see.
