The cultural and historical significance of the sacred pipes
Monday, September 12, 2022

Join Unlimited Learning on Monday, September 12, 2022, 1:30 p.m., to hear from Bud and Rona Johnston, who are "Keepers of the Sacred Tradition of Pipemakers.”

The 1920 Duluth Lynchings

One of the most horrific events in Minnesota history occurred in Duluth on June 15, 1920, when three African American circus workers, suspects in an assault case, were taken from the jail and lynched by a white mob of thousands.

On Monday, April 11, at 1:30 p.m. in the Forum Room at Crosby-Ironton High School, Lakes Area Unlimited Learning will welcome Dr. David Gray, Cuyuna Range native and Central Lakes College history professor, who will carefully examine this tragedy and the context in which it occurred.

Dr. Gray will address such questions as: Why did it happen in 1920? What factors were in play that resulted in these evil acts? Besides the mob, who bears responsibility for these murders? What was the context and what were the reactions and repercussions?

Long forgotten – or just ignored – Duluth and all Minnesotans are now remembering and memorializing this tragedy. Join Lakes Area Unlimited Learning for the opportunity to hear more about this violent and lawless episode.

The fee is $5.00 for non-members, and it’s free for members.

Brainerd: Then, Now and into the Future

On Monday, March 14, at 1:30 p.m. in the Forum Room at Crosby-Ironton High School, Lakes Area Unlimited Learning will celebrate that history and commemorate Brainerd’s sesquicentennial celebration (150 years) with a panel discussion on the past, present and future of Brainerd.

LAUL has invited two dedicated historical investigators, Carl “Fert” Faust and Julie Jo Larson, to present samplings of Brainerd’s very colorful history.

Faust, the 2021 Brainerd Citizen of the Year, is well known for his passion for Brainerd history. In 2006, Faust organized the first Downtown Brainerd History Walk, which continues today. His ongoing leadership in local history initiatives has resulted in Faust being often called Brainerd’s “History Hero.”

Julie Jo Larson is a writer and storyteller as well as the founder of MsStorians, a group of local women historians who study cemeteries, century-old buildings and vanishing communities. In April of 2021, Larson released a book of some of her adventures, “100 Things to do in Minnesota Northwoods Before You Die.”

The panel will also look to Brainerd’s future. Brainerd Mayor Dave Badeaux and City Administrator Jennifer Bergman will share their views of the opportunities and challenges that face our dynamic community during the next few years.

The panel moderator will be Jack Hickerson, Brainerd native and retired Southwest Minnesota State University faculty member.

The fee is $5.00 for non-members, and it’s free for members.

Join us on Monday, Feb. 14 to learn about Restorative Justice: Giving young offenders better options

Since 2004, juvenile offenders in Crow Wing County have had an alternative to entering the court system through the Lakes Area Restorative Justice Project, resulting in significantly reduced recidivism and reduced crime rates. Participant numbers are growing rapidly, and now young adults are being added to this successful program.

Come and hear Brian Andrews, executive director of Lakes Area Restorative Justice Project, talk about proven practices that focus on the needs of all those involved – victim, offender, family and community – rather than court justice that’s focused on the offender, guilt and punishment. Restorative justice helps return young people to the community as productive members. 92 percent of offenders will complete their Restorative Contract with a recidivism rate of 13.5 percent, compared to the national average of 67 percent. Lakes Area Restorative Justice Project works directly with Crow Wing County police departments, the sheriff’s department, the county attorney’s office, social services and schools.

Brian Andrews will speak at Lakes Area Unlimited Learning on Monday, Feb. 14. at 1:30 p.m. in the Forum Room of Crosby-Ironton High School. Admission is free for members and $5.00 for non-members.

DISCOVER THE AMAZING WOODWORKING ART OF KUMIKO

Lakes Area Unlimited Learning is proud to present Vince W. Cook, Brainerd, an expert in the dazzling wood working craft of Kumiko, a 400 year-old style that uses pressure and precise angles to form about 200 traditional patterns. A life-long woodworker, Mr. Cook has studied furniture making, design and finishing at North Bennett Street School in Boston, MA, and the Philadelphia Furniture Workshop. In 2017, he received an art’s grant from the Five Wings Arts Council to study Kumiko at the Philadelphia Furniture Workshop.

Mr. Cook will present a film and demonstrate the art of Kumiko at Unlimited Learning ‘s meeting on Monday, January 10, at 1:30 p.m. in the Forum Room of Crosby-Ironton High School. Admission is free for members and $5.00 for non-members.
