As a lifelong champion of education and educators, there were few jobs I could imagine better than being a teacher when I graduated from the University of Minnesota.
I started my career in Royalton, Minnesota as a proud member of the teachers’ union, teaching history and civics and learning a lot about both in the process.
Kids don’t understand gridlock or dysfunction — they just expect the government to work.
I joined Lori’s campaign because Minnesota needs more statewide leaders who will make education a priority. Our campaign is collecting signatures from 10,000 education voters who will make schools their top issue at the polls.
After teaching (and working the chains during Friday night football games) in Royalton, I became a Curriculum Coordinator for the Little Falls Basic Education Program, and then later, director of a Head Start Program in Central Minnesota and chairman of the Central Lakes College Foundation, raising money for disadvantaged students of all ages.
After a few years, I realized that some of the issues that my students faced in the classroom couldn’t be solved just by good teaching — they needed policymakers who would prioritize education in St. Paul and on Capitol Hill.
I went back to school to study policy, and then went on to the Minnesota House of Representatives, where I campaigned for the Minnesota Miracle, a revolution in state funding that reduced disparities between Minnesota schools and focused on ensuring that every one of our students receives a high-quality education.
Over my time as a teacher and a legislator, I’ve been proud to fight for our kids. Education is, and always will be, one of the best paths to a brighter future. If education will be a priority for you at the polls, add your name to join our coalition of education voters today.
Thank you,
Rick
