The Crookston Police Department would like to remind motorists when a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing and stop-signal arm extended it is unlawful to pass or drive past the bus. You must remain stopped 20 feet from the bus and remain stopped until the stop arm signal is retracted and no longer flashing. Failure to do this can result in a misdemeanor citation or a gross misdemeanor charge if there is a child present. The Crookston Police Department has responded to six reported stop arm violations in 2026 and reminds motorists to be extra cautious around school buses in their daily travels.

Update from the Polk County Highway Department - Minnesota regarding Fisher Avenue.

01/17/2026

🚨 Winter Storm Update – Please Use Caution 🚨

Strong winds continue to cause large snow drifts and very low visibility across the City. Travel conditions can change quickly and may become hazardous.

City Public Works crews were out overnight and throughout most of the morning, actively:

- Clearing drifting snow
- Widening streets where possible
- Assisting tow trucks with motorists who became stuck

Crews will reassess conditions later today and respond as weather allows, as drifting continues to reform in many areas.

⚠️ Please use caution if you must travel.

If possible, we strongly encourage residents and businesses to limit travel until conditions improve.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as crews continue working to keep streets as safe as possible.

Severe Weather Warning - Passing on information from the MN DOT. Friday January 16, 2026

High winds and limited visibility create hazardous driving conditions

BEMIDJI, Minn. – (7:00 a.m.) The Minnesota Department of Transportation has closed highways in northwestern Minnesota due to high winds causing blowing snow and zero visibility. The following roads were previously issued a no travel advisory and are now closed:

Highway 1- North Dakota border to Warren
Highway 2- East Grand Forks to Crookston
Highway 9- Crookston to Borup
Highway 11- North Dakota border to Karlstad
Highway 75- Perley to Canadian border
Highway 175- North Dakota border to Hallock
Highway 220 – Climax to Hwy 11

Motorists should plan accordingly. When a road is closed it is illegal to travel in that area. Motorists can be fined up to $1,000 and/or sentenced to 90 days in jail. In addition, if travelers need to be rescued from a closed road, other expenses and penalties will apply.

Motorists should prepare for changing weather and monitor road conditions at 511mn.org. Drivers should plan accordingly with an emergency supply kit and clothing for extreme cold.

MnDOT snowplow operators will do their part to make highways safe and motorists should remember to:

Stay alert for snowplows, which turn or exit frequently and often with little warning
Stay back at least 10 car lengths behind the plow. Don’t drive into a snow cloud.
Slow down to a safe speed for current conditions.
Turn on your headlights and wear your seat belt.
Turn off the cruise control.
Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.
Don’t drive distracted.
