The Kiwanis Club and Foundation of Crofton, MD

The Kiwanis Club and Foundation of Crofton, MD Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.

Community service is the main objective of Kiwanis, and Crofton Kiwanis is deeply involved in Crofton affairs. Several times a year the club sponsors a Blood Drive in conjunction with the Anne Arundel Medical Center. The annual Kiwanis Halloween parade for children has been a tradition for over 30 years. Monthly Bingo and Birthday parties at Crofton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center are a hig

hlight for the residents. We have also provided significant support to severely wounded veterans with an ongoing special project. Every April, the club participates in the Rebuilding Together home renovation project. Monthly dinners and other assistance are provided at Sarah’s House, a local homeless shelter. In 2007 and2008 we funded their children's summer activity program. During the holidays, Crofton Kiwanians ring the bell for the Salvation Army, provide meals and gifts for several families, and provide holiday gifts through the Christmas Angel program. Throughout the year, the club maintains the Crofton Parkway flags. Beyond the local community, we support Johns Hopkins Hospital Children's Pediatric Trauma Center, the Kiwanis International Young Children Priority One projects, and a number of other charitable organizations. Crofton Kiwanis has, in 2007 and 2008 been the primary financial source for Crofton Caring Council funding. Each year our club sponsors a golf tournament in May, the annual Crofton 10K race in June, and participates in the Crofton Craft Fairs, selling commemorative ornaments. The club’s largest fundraiser is its annual Charity Auction, held in November. These events are not only fundraisers, but also serve as highly popular community activities. Sponsored Youth support is given to a K-Kids Club at Crofton Woods Elementary School, a Builders Club at Crofton Middle School, and Key Clubs at Arundel and Archbishop Spalding High Schools. These clubs conduct their own service projects and work on joint projects with Kiwanis throughout the year.

A reminder that you can recycle your used ink cartridges at the CCA Town Hall or the Crofton Library. There is a Crofton Kiwanis Ink Cartridge recycling bin at both locations, and the proceeds go right back into programs benefiting kids in the greater Crofton area.

Help Support the Crofton Parkway Flags! Sunday, June 14, 2026 is Flag Day and this year, being the 205th Anniversary of our Country, we are asking Crofton residents to support this Crofton tradition.

Everyone loves seeing the US and Maryland Flags along Crofton Parkway. They go up before Memorial Day and are taken down after Veterans Day every year. The Crofton Civic Association started this program back when Ed Dosek was the CCA President, and the Crofton Kiwanis Club has since taken over management of this program.

However, each year those flags and poles take a beating! On average 32 flags and 25 poles are replaced each year. In the last 11 years, the Crofton Kiwanis Club has spent over $13,000 on replacement poles, flags, and fittings. Last year we saw unusual wind and flag and pole replacements cost almost $2,500 this year.

You can help us keep this Crofton Tradition alive by donating any amount to the Crofton Kiwanis Foundation Flag Fund. You can make your donation a one-time donation or a recurring monthly donation. At the Crofton Kiwanis/Crofton Civic Association’s “Flags for Heroes” removal at Crofton main entrance on May 30, Project Chair Jim Harvey observed that none of 102 flag poles had been downed or damaged by weather stress during the two-week Memorial Day observance. In large part this was due to stabilizing metal stakes affixed and zip-tied to each flagpole by Kiwanis friend Haramis Electric (which at end also removed those metal stakes). Several frayed U. S. flags have now been respectfully retired for replacements.

The flags removal and storage was done rapidly by only about eight stalwart Crofton Kiwanians and the volunteer Transit truck-and-muscle team of Richard Shipley and his nephew Stevie. The next Flags for Heroes observance is in November at Veterans Day, to honor the U. S. military, veterans and first responders. Contact Crofton Kiwanis Club Vice President Jim Harvey for volunteer and flag sponsorship details.

The Crofton Kiwanis Club celebrated the 50th anniversary of their charter, to the day, at the Crofton Country Club on Wednesday, May 11th.
Numerous guests for the celebration included International Trustee Dennis Baugh, Capital District Governor Tim Gillette, and District 4 Lt. Governor Katie Pahewski.
Current President Renee Mackey (hands outstretched) recognized a number of Kiwanians, past and present, for their service to the club through the years. It was with great sadness that the last surviving Charter Member of the club, Ed Callahan, passed away last October.
Past President Russ Shipley reviewed a series of club milestones. Past Lt. Governor and Service Leadership Chairperson Bill Hand gave a status report of our 12 Key Clubs.
The bottom pictures show a $3000 check for the School Vacation Lunch Project that was presented following the winning of a Kiwanis International grant, and new members Chuck Cook and Arnie Trefflick were inducted to the club.
