Special Board Meeting — September 15, 2026, at 8:00 a.m.

Following public outreach and advertising of the vacant Trustee Area 1 seat, the Board of Education will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. to conduct an interview and consider an appointment.

The appointee will serve only for the remainder of the current term, which ends in December 2026.

Registration is now open for the 2026 Roots of Wellness Summit!

Join us October 1–2 in Crescent City for “The Way Back: How Community-Rooted Practice Is Shaping Youth Substance-Use Prevention and Restoration.”

This two-day summit will bring together educators, families, Tribal leaders, youth professionals, policymakers, and community partners to explore community-rooted and research-informed approaches to youth wellness. Participants will learn practical strategies for substance-use prevention, school wellness, early intervention, restorative response, and supporting young people through connection.

Featured presenters include Judge Abby Abinanti, Chief Judge of the Yurok Tribal Court, and Dee Hankins, Human Behavior and Resilience Expert.

Dear Families,
This year, the Del Norte County Office of Education is strengthening and updating safety programs across schools throughout the county. As part of this work, employees are being trained in the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), which provides students, staff, first responders, and families with clear, consistent language and actions for responding during an emergency.

Schools will also conduct safety drills and preparedness activities throughout the year. Some of this work will involve our local law enforcement and emergency response partners. As a result, families and community members may occasionally see law-enforcement personnel or vehicles on campus during scheduled training or drills.

We want families to know that these planned activities are part of our ongoing safety and preparedness work. If law enforcement is on campus responding to an emergency rather than participating in a planned drill or training activity, the school or district will communicate directly with families as soon as accurate information is available.

Students may talk about these activities at home or have questions about what they practiced or experienced. We encourage families to have conversations with their children about what they learned and to reassure them that practicing these procedures helps students and staff know what to do during an emergency.

Participating in a Cultural Ceremony or Event?

Families are reminded that California law allows students to receive an excused absence when they are away from school for the purpose of participating in a cultural ceremony or event.

Under California Education Code Section 48205, “cultural” refers to the habits, practices, beliefs, and traditions of a group of people.

If your student will be participating in a cultural ceremony or event during the school year, please contact your school in advance so staff can help you plan for the absence and any schoolwork that may be missed.

DNUSD students may also have opportunities to complete an Independent Study Contract and receive additional academic support surrounding their absence.

Help Us Stay Connected With Your Family

Strong communication between families and schools helps us share important information quickly and keep families informed throughout the school year.

Please take a moment to make sure the contact information on file with your child’s school is current. This includes phone numbers and email addresses for parents and guardians, emergency contacts, and anyone authorized to pick up your child. Accurate information is especially important when schools need to reach families quickly or during an emergency.

Families are also encouraged to contact their school office as soon as possible when they know their child will be absent. The earlier we know, the better our staff can work with families around attendance and any available opportunities to recover missed days.

DNUSD schools communicate with families through phone calls, text messages, email, school websites, and pages.

If you are not receiving school or district communications, first verify your contact information with your school office. If your information is correct and you are still having trouble receiving messages, contact the DNUSD Communications Department at 707-464-6143.
