Dear Crescent City Family,

Tomorrow at 10:00 (PST), CGC DORADO will hold a virtual decommissioning ceremony to commemorate her removal from service. All are invited to participate virtually by watching the event on Facebook live on the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay page. We also invite you to view Sector Humboldt's page for a series of posts and pictures in honor of CGC DORADO's 20 years of service. Thank you all for your overwhelming encouragement and support through the years. It has been an absolute privilege for the present and past DORADO crews to serve the people of Crescent City.

Everyone on or near the water should be aware of the dangers of the incoming weather system.

A High Surf Advisory is in effect from Friday morning through Saturday morning. A large west-northwest swell will push into the coastal waters late tonight, with rapidly building surf heading into Friday. Breaker heights will reach up to 25 feet, especially by Friday evening.

Additionally, some coastal flooding is possible during the morning high tide on Friday between 6:00 and 9:00 AM. Large waves will lead to increased run-up on beaches with waves topping and washing over large rocks and jetties. These large waves will be capable of sweeping people into the frigid and turbulent ocean waters.

Beachgoers need to stay farther back from the surf and off of jetties or rocks, and mariners should use extreme caution when operating near the surf zone.

A word of caution for any mariners expecting to venture out on the water this weekend in or around the Crescent City area. Weather conditions have a way of suddenly appearing in Northern California and all mariners, and personnel along the shore, should exercise extreme caution with these strong storm systems moving through the area this winter. If you choose to go out on the water or along the shore, remain well clear of jetties and entrance channels, wear a personal flotation device, share your plan with a friend on shore, and bring a marine-band VHF radio. As always, contact the Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16 if you find yourself in distress and in need of assistance.

Already elevated surf will build even higher Friday afternoon and evening with breaker heights around 20 feet along the Northwest California coastline. After a brief period of lower surf late Saturday, surf will again build late Sunday and into Monday as very large, long period westerly swell arrives. Breaker heights during this time period will approach 30 feet, and a High Surf Advisory or High Surf Warning may be required.

CGC DORADO welcomed former crew members of CGC CAPE CARTER (WPB 95309) and spouses aboard for a visitor cruise out to the St. George Reef Lighthouse last week. The CAPE CARTER crew members and spouses were in Crescent City for a 50 year reunion. The CAPE CARTER was stationed in Crescent City from the 1960’s to the 1980’s and completed many of the same missions as DORADO now.
