Mineral County Noxious Weed Department

Mineral County Noxious Weed Department Our program is here to help the residents of Mineral County control noxious w**ds and to keep this fantastic region beautiful.

In 1990 Colorado passed a law to monitor and control Noxious w**ds within the State of Colorado; as a result, the Mineral County Noxious W**d Department was created. This law outlined the threat of noxious w**ds to the environment and what exactly a noxious w**d is. A w**d is an out of place plant object, and a noxious w**d is a non-native w**d species; these are a huge problem because non-native

plants can completely take over an ecosystem and push out native species. One of the key components of this law was the establishment of several lists. List A w**ds mean immediate removal and eradication of w**d species, whereas List B w**ds do not require an immediate response and allow for the establishment of management plans. The next list is List C, and List C w**ds are w**ds that are so invasive that there are far too many of them to combat effectively. The very last list is a Watch List and is used to monitor w**ds that have not yet come to Colorado but are in neighboring states. Our mission here at the Mineral County Noxious W**d Department is to help remove and eradicate noxious w**ds within the area of Mineral County. Lastly, what we want is to be a service to the residents of Mineral County so if you enlist our services you are only paying for cost recovery. We will only charge you for what it cost us to manage your w**ds and we will make no profit from it.

>>>CANADA THISTLE>>>
Canada Thistle is a non-native (invasive) deep rooted perennial that spreads through seeds and aggressive roots. Each plant can produce up to 4,800 seeds that can be spread by the wind and are viable in the soil for up to 20 years. Canada Thistle flowers in late April to early spring and continues throughout the summers. It has bright green oblong leaves with small clusters of 1 to 5 flowers that have a purple and pink tint. Canada thistle can grow 2 to 4 feet tall and its' habitat includes meadows, roadsides, pastures, and irrigated cropland. Canada Thistle is a host plant to several agricultural pests and diseases. Large infestations will dramatically reduce crop and forage production and resources for native plants. If you see this plant or happen to have any questions please feel free to call the Mineral County Noxious W**d Department at 1 (406)-531-1092.

>>>HOUNDSTONGUE>>>
Houndstongue is a noxious w**d located on the noxious w**d list B. Houndstongue is a short lived perennial that produces 2,000 seeds viable for 1-3 years. The first year rosettes are produced, followed by 1 to 4 feet tall stems that produce flowers and fruit. The flowers appear to be reddish purple. This plant grows on moist and disturbed areas such as roadsides, ditches, forests, sand dunes, and trails. Due to its distinct smell wildlife tend to stay away from this plant, but if a lethal dose is ingested, wildlife may only live up to six months. The key to effective control is preventing establishment and seed production. If you see this plant in any stage, or have any questions please give us a call at the Noxious W**d Program. 1 (406)- 531-1092
