The Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends, and the men and women of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office on the passing of retired Sheriff Richard Roundtree.

A respected leader, mentor, and public servant; may his life and legacy continue to live on through all who were impacted by his service.

From the Desk of Taliaferro County Sheriff Tia M. McWilliams:

It is with a heavy heart and deep respect that I extend my personal condolences on the passing of Retired Sheriff Richard Roundtree of Richmond County, Georgia.

Sheriff Roundtree was a highly skilled investigative law enforcement leader whose impact reached far beyond Richmond County.

As a mentoring Sheriff, he extended his full support to me and Taliaferro County, visiting with our senior citizens in December 2022, hosting our first women’s firearm training in June 2024, and supporting our youth by contributing to our Annual Christmas Toy Giveaway in December 2025 following his retirement.

As a friend, I recall him advising those around him to live in the moment, a message that now carries even greater meaning and serves as a reminder to pause, take care of ourselves, and embrace life while we have it.

As a fellow Sheriff, I recall him saying that some men are not meant to be happy, they are meant to be great, and his life stood as a testament to that truth. It was a life defined by impact, responsibility, sacrifice, pressure, and perseverance, carrying the weight of a calling not always seen or understood, while steadfastly placing purpose above personal happiness and comfort.

To his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him, we, the people of Taliaferro County, extend our deepest condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Sincerely,

Sheriff Tia M. McWilliams
Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Office

And Sheriff, if this was a bit too long, I can hear you now: “I don’t like long stories, and I don’t like cake - get to the point.” Well, I tried sir. Rest in Peace Tree
