PRESS RELEASE - SEPTEMBER 14, 2020
COMMISSIONERS APPOINT COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR

On September 14, 2020, the Board of Commissioners appointed Tom Klein as County Administrator. Klein received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Affairs and his Masters Degree in Public Administration from the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs. He began his career in the Public Works Department for the City of Bloomington and later served as the Executive Assistant to the Mayor of Bloomington. Klein then worked for two years as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Assistant to the Public Works Director for the City of Indianapolis. In 1998, Klein was appointed as the first Town Manager for the Town of Avon, and he held that position for 22 years.

Klein is a Credentialed Manager recognized by the International City County Management Association and has a Level One Certification from the Municipal Management Institute of Accelerate Indiana Municipalities. He received the Cause-Driven Leadership Award for Social Responsibility from Hendricks Regional Health YMCA of Avon and Circle of Corydon Award from Governor Eric Holcomb. Klein also served as President and Central Regional Director of the Indiana Municipal Management Association.

Board of Commissioners President Jim Fulwider believes that Klein's experience will be of great benefit to Montgomery County. "Tom has an exceptional amount of experience, has a positive attitude, and a willingness to be a part of our community. He knows how government works and how to make improvements in efficiencies and vision. This is an exciting time as we fill this position with a very experienced and talented person," Fulwider said.

Commissioner John Frey is impressed with Klein's track record of looking to the future and obtaining funding for road projects. Frey stated that, "Tom has a wealth of experience in securing funding for infrastructure projects and then getting the projects to completion. He will help us focus on our most pressing needs and then quickly address them."

Commissioner Dan Guard was most impressed with Klein's personal character. "We are very fortunate to find a person like Tom to be our Administrator. We are gaining a valuable manager, and our community is gaining a great family," Guard said.

County Council President Tom Mellish and Councilman Don Mills participated in the interview process with the Commissioners.

For his part Klein is excited to join the Montgomery County team. "I want to thank the County Commissioners and County Council for this opportunity to work with them in order to implement their vision for the County. My family is excited to move to Montgomery County and make new friends and be active in the community.

As County Administrator, Klein will manage the day-to-day operations of County Government and will administer County policies and plans.

Klein is a member of the Avon United Methodist Church and Avon Rotary Club and active in many community activities. He is also a past director for the Indiana Youth Soccer Association.

Klein and his wife, Lexi and his daughter, Grace, plan to relocate to Montgomery County. Tom is also the father of three adult sons, Matt, Evan and Cameron.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES 20 ADDITIONAL CASES,
CLUSTER AT WABASH COLLEGE

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. ― The Montgomery County Health Department announced today 20 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Montgomery County, 14 of which are students of Wabash College. Four cases are staff of Bickford Senior Living. This brings the county’s total cumulative cases to 446. There have been 21 overall cumulative fatalities connected to the coronavirus disease.

An increase in positive cases in Montgomery County is not surprising as positive cases among Wabash College students, once back on campus, are reflected as part of the county’s data on the Indiana State Department of Health dashboard.

Wabash College has been innovative and adaptive in their approach to address COVID-19 this academic school year. In addition to common mitigation strategies (social distancing, wearing masks, washing hands/hygiene, etc.), a surveillance program at the college has been successful in identifying students with COVID-19. The program includes random testing and an app used to monitor symptoms of students and staff. Students who test positive for COVID-19 are isolated and cared for by staff on campus. Close contacts identified through contact tracing are sent home in most cases to quarantine.

Like the recent cluster identified at Bickford Senior Living, the positive cases of students at Wabash College are related to communal living clusters, such as dormitories and fraternities, which is common on college campuses. Most colleges and universities are dealing with similar challenges among their student body.

Demographics related to cases are available on the Indiana State Department of Health’s online dashboard at www.in.gov/coronavirus. Local demographics can be found by clicking on Montgomery County on the state map.

Updates and other information can be found on the Montgomery County Health Department website and social media channels. Other information is available on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website (www.coronavirus.gov) or the Indiana State Department of Health website (www.in.gov/coronavirus).

PRESS RELEASE

CLUSTER OF CASES CONFIRMED AT ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. ― The Montgomery County Health Department announced today that a cluster of COVID-19 cases have been confirmed at a Crawfordsville assisted living facility.

A total of 17 residents of Bickford Senior Living have tested positive for the virus. The first case of COVID-19 was confirmed last week, which prompted the testing of all 23 residents of the facility. Results confirmed 15 residents had tested positive for the virus on Saturday. The cluster was part of the 21 overall new cases reported Saturday in Montgomery County, which marks the highest single-day amount in the county. An additional resident was confirmed positive on Sunday.

Pertinent family members have been contacted by Bickford staff and restricted visitation is in place at this time. All residents of the Crawfordsville facility – which provides assisted living and memory care services – have been tested and results are complete. All staff were tested Monday and results are pending.

The recent jump in lab-confirmed cases brings the county’s total cumulative cases to 425. There have been 21 overall cumulative fatalities connected to the coronavirus disease.
