Did you know that apart from teaching Biology at Wabash, Dr. Robert O. Petty was a writer and consultant for the National Geographic Society since 1972?

Aside from writing, Petty in the late 1950s, used radioactive isotopes to study the energy pathways within the forest ecosystems of Allee Woods, a 200 acre old-growth forest research and teaching site for Wabash. During the start of the Cold War, the Atomic Energy Commission funded Petty's research because they were interested in learning about the movement of radioactivity through different ecosystems.

In celebration of Black History Month, we will be highlighting some of Wabash's most impactful individuals and events.

Today, we feature Samuel Simpson Gordon. Gordon was born on April 21, 1885. This image features Gordon in 1907 where he played Guard and Half Back for Wabash College. During his Wabash football career, many opposing teams conflicted with playing against Wabash's colored guard. Gordon was forced to sit out for some games due to racial prejudice. Gordon only attended Wabash for one year before enlisting in the 8th Illinois Regiment National Guard, known as the the "Blue Devils". Gordon's regiment served in World War I where he was cited for his meritorious service and awarded the Croix de Guerre.
