On National Vietnam War Veterans Day, we honor the legacy of the millions who served our nation during the Vietnam War. On March 29, 1973, the last American combat troops left Vietnam. More than three million Americans served in-country during the war and 58,281 men and women made the ultimate sacrifice. We continue to lose Vietnam veterans every day as a result of the war’s lingering effects.

Many Vietnam veterans returned home to a divided country and, at times, little to no respect for their service. Today, we honor all they gave for their country. Together, we will continue to show our gratitude for our Vietnam veterans and work to ensure their service and sacrifices are never forgotten.

To our Vietnam veterans, “Thank you for your service and Welcome Home!” https://bit.ly/3cvLSv1

Today is National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

At the creation of the National League of POW/MIA Families on May 28, 1970, the League’s mission is to obtain the release and return of all prisoners, the fullest possible accounting for the missing, and the repatriation of remains of those not yet recovered who died while serving our nation. Visit our Wall of Faces website to see the profiles of the more than 1500 still listed as MIA: https://bit.ly/4gqUDFG

Today is . There were approximately 351,000 Purple Heart medals awarded to Vietnam veterans. Our "Items Left at the Wall" collection has 97 digitally cataloged items related to and including several Purple Hearts. https://bit.ly/3iwaNBK

There is a story, which may or may not be true, that when the concrete was being poured for the retaining walls of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, a veteran came up, dropped a Purple Heart in the concrete and saluted. If this story is true, it also marks the first of many hundreds of thousands of items that have been left at The Wall over the years. We honor and thank our country's recipients.
