Black Mesa CattleWomen Black Mesa CattleWomen's, a non-profit 501 (C) 3 organization, mission is to support and promote beef.

Black Mesa CattleWomen are based out of the Crawford and North Fork Valley and consist of women with a passion for educating about and supporting our beef industry. If you raise cattle or just have a passion to help us foster an understanding of the beef industry, Black Mesa CattleWomen welcome you to become a member. We love to address any questions from consumers and love to share our stories.

Sixteen ranch wives met in Douglas, Arizona in 1939 and built something the whole country copied

October 17, 1939. Sixteen women who ran ranch households around Douglas sat down together and organized. They called themselves the Cowbelles. The stated purpose was social - bring cattle families together, look after the community - and the first projects were quilts sewn for people who needed them. It did not stay small. It turned into beef promotion, scholarships, and a voice the cattlemen's associations had to make room for.

It went statewide in January 1947 at a cattlemen's convention in Phoenix. By 1952 there was a national version, the American National CattleWomen, and it exists because of what those women in Cochise County had already proved worked.

The men had the brand and the grazing lease. The women had the books, the meals, the school runs, the funerals - and after 1939, the organization.
