September 1 is National Law Enforcement K9 Day. RIDOC works with our partners at the Rhode Island Parole Board to have dogs available for victims of crime. Meet Luna, Paisley, Ripp, and Hemi. RIDOC's Comfort Dog Program provides specially trained dogs to accompany victims of crime as they attend meetings with the Parole Board. On July 30, members of RIDOC presented at the American Correctional Association conference in Pittsburgh on the topic of Vicarious Trauma and Corrections Fatigue: Strategies for Supporting Staff, Building Resiliency and Effective Self Care. Before a standing room only audience, Caitlin Bouchard , Clinical Administrator of Behavioral Health, and Crystal Manco, Clinical Supervisor, outlined the various traumas those in the correctional field are exposed to regularly and strategies staff can utilize to focus on self-care. Introduction and welcome remarks delivered by our Chief of Staff Ryan Crowley.

Effective August 11, 2026, RIDOC will pilot a security practice for the use of clear bags and clear lunch bags for individuals with a green badge entering secure facilities. Any other type of bag will not be permitted. Green badges are held by people like interns, clinicians, educators, service providers, and volunteers. Green badge personnel will only be allowed to bring in approved items authorized to enter secure facilities. This proactive measure will enhance safety and streamline security checks. This is in line with best practices in many prison systems across the country.

Today is National Intern Day which recognizes the key role that internships play in shaping the future of our workforce. The RIDOC Internship Correctional Academy was developed to provide college students with meaningful, hands-on experience across the many disciplines in corrections while fostering a greater understanding of correctional operations, rehabilitation, public service, and the important role each of us plays in supporting successful outcomes for the justice-involved population. Over the past nine weeks, our interns have dedicated their time to learning from staff throughout the Department, participating in educational presentations, touring facilities, and gaining practical experience that will help prepare them for future careers. Next week, these students will be recognized for their time investment and celebrated for their hard work in completing the academy.

July 26 is National Parents’ Day. RIDOC’s Books Beyond program helps strengthen the bond between incarcerated parents and their children through books. Volunteers help inmates choose new, age-appropriate books for their children from a large selection of children's books. Under the guidance of the volunteer, the inmates read and record the books onto audiotape or CD. The volunteer then mails the books and the tapes or CDs home to the children to keep. Books Beyond has received support from the State of Rhode Island, the federal Reading Is Fundamental program and Reach Out and Read Rhode Island. Books Beyond creates a much-needed tie between parent and child. With the help and supervision of volunteers, inmates will be able to provide messages of love, reassurance, and connection to their children. The children will have a constant reminder of their mothers and fathers, that is, books and recordings that may be re-read and replayed over and over. This all-volunteer program provides a regular and essential link between incarcerated parents and their families, providing an opportunity for healthy contact.
