Emergencies can happen without warning—but one way we can all be prepared is by helping ensure hospitals have a ready supply of blood before it's needed.

Blood can't be manufactured, and during emergencies, patients rely on donations that were given before a crisis occurs. That's why maintaining a strong, stable blood supply is an essential part of community preparedness.

This National Preparedness Month, add blood donation to your preparedness checklist. Rhode Island Blood Center hosts daily blood drives and operates six donor centers across the state, making it easy to help ensure lifesaving blood is available whenever patients need it.

🌪️ Tornadoes can develop quickly with little warning, so it's important to know what to do before severe weather strikes.

If a tornado warning is issued, move immediately to the lowest level of a sturdy building and into an interior room away from windows. If you're outdoors or in a vehicle, seek sturdy shelter as soon as possible.

Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and make sure your family knows where to take shelter.

🚨 RI mosquito report: Mosquito samples collected in Cranston and Providence on August 17 have tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). The current risk level for WNV remains high statewide. No signs of EEE, Jamestown Canyon Virus, or additional WNV were found in other samples statewide.

🦟 WNV is the most common mosquito-borne illness in the U.S. While most people don’t get sick, about 1 in 5 may develop fever and other symptoms. There is no vaccine or specific treatment.

✅ Protect yourself from mosquito bites:

• Use EPA-approved insect repellent
• Wear long sleeves and long pants
• Eliminate standing water around your home
• Avoid outdoor activities during dawn and dusk
