As ATV/UTV season approaches, the City of Crandon would like to remind residents and visitors of the rules and regulations for operating off-road vehicles within city limits.
ATVs and UTVs are permitted on most city streets; however, operation is not allowed on numbered state highways unless a designated trail runs alongside the roadway. Examples of restricted routes include Lake Avenue, Pioneer Street (from Hwy 55 west to Hwy -8- east), Glen Street (west of Hwy -8-), and Lake Avenue north (Hwy 32/55), unless otherwise posted.
Riders may cross state highways but may not travel along them. For instance, if traveling west from Madison Street toward Rhinelander via the state trail, you may cross Lake Avenue (Hwy -8-), but not ride along it.
While operating on city streets, please drive responsibly and obey all posted traffic signs and speed limits. Most city streets in Crandon have a 25 MPH speed limit.
For safety and compliance, flashing lights, whip antenna lights, and similar off-road lighting must be turned off while operating on city roads. Please note that blue flashing lights are illegal on any vehicle on or visible from a roadway in the State of Wisconsin. A white headlight(s) and a red taillight(s) is required to be on when driving on roadways regardless if it's day or night.
Operating an ATV/UTV under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited and will be enforced on both city streets and state trails.
Our goal is for everyone to enjoy a fun and safe riding season. This information is provided to help educate riders on local regulations. If you plan to ride outside of Forest County, please review local ordinances, as rules may vary by area.
