ARRIVE Together:

Cranbury Chief of Police Michael Owens is pleased to announce that Cranbury Township has joined the Alternative Responses to Reduce Instances of Violence and Escalation (ARRIVE) Together program.
Launched as a pilot in 2021, the ARRIVE program pairs a New Jersey State Trooper, trained in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques, with a certified mental health screener and crisis specialist to respond to 9-1-1 calls related to mental and behavioral health emergencies. Since its initial success, the program has expanded statewide, with operations in all twenty-one of New Jersey’s counties. This expansion makes New Jersey the first state in the U.S. to implement a comprehensive, statewide law enforcement and mental health alternative response initiative.
ARRIVE models are tailored to meet the specific needs, resources, and priorities of each participating community. In Cranbury's model, a specially trained Cranbury Police officer partners with a Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care mental health screener to respond to calls one day a month. Outside of active calls, the team provides follow-up support, conducts community outreach, and connects individuals with valuable resources and services. Cranbury collaborates with East Brunswick, South Brunswick, South River, and Plainsboro to provide expanded response coverage five days a week.
According to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, ARRIVE meets several critical objectives: First, it allows mental health specialists, rather than officers alone, to address behavioral health issues, creating safer outcomes for vulnerable residents. Second, it improves access to mental health resources, with screeners available on scene early in the response process, expediting appropriate care and preventing escalation. Third, ARRIVE reduces unnecessary hospital transports, allowing more individuals to remain in the community. Finally, the program strengthens trust between law enforcement and residents, promotes the well-being of those experiencing mental health emergencies, and reduces stigma by connecting individuals to care instead of the criminal justice system.

2024 Halloween

This upcoming Thursday is Halloween. The sun will be out, and temperatures are expected to be at near record highs. It is shaping up to be a great, well-attended evening.

The Cranbury Township Police Department wishes to remind everyone, both enjoying the night here in town or those simply driving through, to take extra caution during the trick-or-treating hours.

For our pedestrians, we ask that you use sidewalks when available and to please cross streets at marked crosswalks, looking first in both directions. Parents, please accompany and walk with your young children. Consider using bright costumes, flashlights or glow sticks during low-visibility hours.

For our drivers, we ask that you be extra cautious when navigating our roadways. Drive slowly and always be on the lookout for trick-or-treaters, particularly within the neighborhoods and at street intersections.

For those at home, it is good practice to keep your porches well it, your walkways clear of debris and your pets secure.

In preparation for a safe night Cranbury Police Officers have already visited with the younger students at the school, educating them on pedestrian and Halloween safety. There will be additional Officers on patrol, both on foot and in marked vehicles, throughout the evening to safely monitor everyone out enjoying the festivities. Our school crossing guards will be assisting with the foot traffic at the busier intersections. Our message boards will be deployed, alerting drivers to be extra careful and, as in years past, we will have several portable light towers out illuminating the darker areas in town.

Cranbury Township Police Officers are dedicated to the safety of our residents and all those who come to Cranbury for an evening of fun and fellowship, especially the children. We look forward to Halloween as it always is a special night in our town and, like in years past, we will be out working to ensure a safe night as well.

Sincerely,
Michael J Owens
Chief of Police / OEM Coordinator

We are excited to announce that Officer Collin Nichols and Officer Tucker Nichols swore their oaths in front of family and friends to become our newest Cranbury Police Officers.
These two brothers grew up right here in Cranbury and are fulfilling their ambitions to return to serve the community they call home.
Officer Collin Nichols has prior work experience with Allenhurst Police Department. Officer Tucker Nichols worked with Old Bridge Police Department as a Class II Officer in the school system there.
We are confident they will serve our community with professionalism, integrity, and courage.

We also officially recognized our Chaplain, Joanne Petto, with her Chaplain Badge and an official Township Resolution. Joanne has served as the Chaplain to our Police Department for approximately 20 years. She has always been available to our Officers for spiritual strength and emotional support and has been a pillar of support and love for all and we are lucky to have her.
