We need your help today to urge your members of Congress to reject proposed cuts to WIC and TEFAP storage and distribution funding.
At a time when food insecurity rates and the cost of food is high, and our food banks have fewer resources; we will not be able to make up the difference this bill creates. This appropriations package will disproportionately impact Colorado infants, toddlers, new and expecting mothers, and rural communities.
The current proposal by the House Appropriations Committee would cut WIC funding by $200 million, the WIC fruit and vegetable benefit by $140 million, and TEFAP storage and distribution funding by $5 million. All three are critical funds and these reductions would put further pressure on Colorado's food banks to serve the needs of their communities—meaning less food for seniors, families, children, active military members and other individuals facing hunger.
Take Action Today
WIC provides meaningful support to over 100,000 infants, toddlers, and new and expecting mothers across Colorado. The program serves Coloradans who are pregnant, breastfeeding (up to 1 year), recently postpartum (up to 6 months), or children under age five and is proven to reduce fetal deaths, infant mortality, and low birth weight. This proposal would translate to a more than $2 million cut to the 76,000 Colorado children and mothers who rely on it. Approximately 14.3% of children in Colorado (around 172,540) are food insecure as of 2023, meaning roughly 1 in 7 kids face hunger.
TEFAP is one of our core federal nutrition programs and represents roughly 20% of the food the Feeding Colorado distributes and can reach as high as 40-50% in rural Colorado communities. This proposal to decrease storage and distribution funding by $5 million will directly inhibit food bank's capacity to serve rural communities across our state.
Take action above to tell your members of Congress to oppose cuts to these vital programs!
