Today, members from Covington Independent Fire Company, INC. joined crews from Thornhurst Vol. Fire and Rescue Co., Shades Creek Fire Department, and Bear Creek Twp Vol Fire / Rescue for a rescue training exercise at Choke Creek Falls in the Pinchot State Forest.

Choke Creek is frequented by outdoor enthusiasts all year long, posing unique rescue conditions. Exercises like these allow crews to work with techniques that are not frequently used, building familiarization, and help as a team building opportunity for departments that dont often work together.

Mike Prekopa, EMS-14A and an IBSC certified Wilderness Paramedic, led members of CIFC in the usage of Utility 14, a Polaris Side-by-Side outfitted for brush fire and austere rescue operations, to aid in rescue operations, and offer on site safety management for participants.

Today's training exercise consisted of members working to locate a missing person whom was injured, as well as package and extricate the patient to a location ambulances would be able to reach. Along the way, members also worked to pick up any garbage that had been left in the woods by previous visitors.

3 hours of training, and two bags of garbage later, our members left only footprints in the mud, and we're able to take home some valuable knowledge, should there ever be a need for a real rescue.

Special thanks to DCNR for allowing us the opportunity to train in the forest and familiarize ourselves with the area.
