Officer Robert L. Hylemon - End of Watch: September 4, 1976

Today, Friday, September 4, 2026, is the 50th anniversary of the heartbreaking death of Officer Robert L. Hylemon, Badge #202. Officer Hylemon's life was tragically cut short in an automobile accident during a vehicle pursuit while on duty. Despite the passage of time, Officer Hylemon's service to our community and time with our department will never be forgotten. Please help us honor his memory and his service to Covington.🖤💙

Register for our Fall 2026 Citizens Academy now before it's too late! Only 10 spots left!

The Covington Police Department is accepting applications for enrollment into their Citizens Academy for Fall 2026.

The Covington Police Department Citizen’s Academy is a six-week program sponsored and led by the Covington Police Department and is free to the citizens of our great community. Participants will learn about the available services, resources and programs offered by the department. More importantly, participants will meet and interact with the men and women who provide these services.

Classes will be a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and interactive activities such as patrol functions, criminal investigations, specialized units, fi****ms training, use of force, and use of force considerations.
The class is limited in size so please submit your application as soon as possible.
Classes are typically held on Tuesday evenings from 6pm-8pm for 5 consecutive weeks. The schedule may be adjusted due to weather, facility availability, conflicts etc. The last class is approximately 4 hours long and held at the Covington Police Department Firing Range.

After 36 years of outstanding service, loyalty, and unwavering compassion for our community, Officer Stacy Cosby has retired. On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, Officer Cosby celebrated her last call after a reception complete with stories, accolades, and a room full of well wishers. Our department will miss her servant heart and beaming smile as the "OG" C-Shift team member starts her retirement journey.

We wish you nothing but joy and peace, 207, as you enter into this next chapter of life's story. Thank you for the example you've set for so many who've walked our halls and for your dedication to and love for the citizens of Covington. We will miss you. 🖤💙

Detectives from the Covington Police Department made two arrests this week in an identity theft involving a package shipping scam. An 80 year-old's identity and card information were used to purchase an iPad online, which was then shipped to a Covington address. A search warrant was conducted on the residence and vehicle of the suspect, which yielded evidence for shipping fraud and uncovered 44 stolen credit cards in 44 different names.

Two suspects were arrested and charged with multiple felonies including; Identity Fraud, Exploitation of the Elderly, Financial Transaction Card Fraud and 44 counts of Financial Transaction Card Theft.

We understand there are questions about Flock Safety Cameras, and we want to address one of the most common misconceptions.

Flock cameras do not store personal information associated with your vehicle registration. They do not contain the owner’s name, address, driver’s license information, insurance information, or any other data maintained by the State of Georgia.

The cameras simply capture an image of a vehicle traveling on a public roadway, along with observable characteristics such as the license plate, vehicle make, model, color, and the date, time, and location the image was taken.
If, during a legitimate criminal investigation, an officer needs to determine the registered owner of a license plate, that information must be obtained through secure state or national law enforcement databases—just as it has been for decades. Flock does not replace those systems or provide unrestricted access to personal information.

Additionally, every search conducted within the Flock system is logged and auditable. Officers must have a legitimate law enforcement purpose to access the system, and misuse is subject to disciplinary action.

Our goal is simple: use proven technology to help recover stolen vehicles, locate missing persons, identify vehicles involved in crimes, and solve cases more quickly—while respecting the privacy and constitutional rights of everyone in our community.
