Red River Parish Sheriff Glen Edwards would like to congratulate the twenty-six participants who recently completed the Louisiana Hunter Education Course. Great job!

According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the goal of the course is to prevent hunting incidents as well as to ensure the future of hunting by teaching hunters about their responsibilities and roles in conservation.

In addition to classroom instruction, the students put their new-found knowledge into practice by participating in field day activities at the Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office (RRPSO) Firing Range.

Leading the course was RRPSO deputy and hunter’s education instructor Lt. Marshall Guin. He was assisted by Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP) Director Shane Hubbard, and civilian volunteer Lee Guin.

Now that these new hunters are equipped with valuable skills and knowledge, hopes are that they will utilize them to be safe and responsible while enjoying their time hunting!

BRIDGE CLOSURE: LA 515 over Coushatta Bayou, Red River Parish

RED RIVER PARISH, La. - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises motorists that beginning on Monday, October 19, 2026, the LA 515 bridge over Coushatta Bayou in Red River Parish will be closed until further notice.

This bridge is located approximately 1 mile north of the intersection with US 71, about five miles north of the Town of Coushatta.

The bridge is being closed due to the condition of the structure for the safety of the traveling public, and will remain closed until such time that repairs or replacement can be developed and implemented.

Restrictions/Permits: Total road closure at the specified location. All vehicles will need to utilize an alternate route.

Alternate Route: Motorists may detour using US 71 and LA 514.

Safety reminder:
DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment. Remember to leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Area residents should exercise caution when driving, walking, or biking near an active construction zone.

Red River Fire District is issuing burn permits for residents who plan to conduct outdoor burning starting tomorrow October 7, 2026

Recent rainfall has helped improve conditions, but unfortunately, the amount of rainfall we have received has not been enough to fully lift the burn ban or eliminate the potential for fires to spread. We are continuing to monitor conditions and are taking a cautious approach to outdoor burning.

Why are burn permits important?

Burn permits help us keep track of where legal burning is taking place and allow emergency responders to know when a reported fire may be an authorized burn. The permitting process also gives us an opportunity to remind residents about safe burning practices and current conditions.

Before you burn, please make sure:

• You have obtained a burn permit
• Your burn is being conducted legally and safely
• Weather and wind conditions are appropriate.
• The fire is attended at all times.
• You have adequate water to control the fire.
• The fire is completely extinguished before leaving the area.

BURN BAN & PRESCRIBED BURNS

IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION

We have received questions regarding prescribed burns being conducted in Red River Parish while the parish-wide burn ban remains in effect.

Yes, the burn ban is still in effect.

However, Louisiana law provides a specific exception for qualified prescribed burning.

Under Louisiana Revised Statute 40:1602(C), the burn-ban restrictions established under that statute do not apply to prescribed burning as defined in R.S. 3:17.

A prescribed burn is a controlled application of fire used for specific land-management purposes and must meet requirements established by Louisiana law and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF).

For a prescribed burn to qualify, among other requirements:

• The burn must be conducted under written authority and in accordance with applicable LDAF requirements.

• A certified prescribed burn manager must be present from ignition until the burn is completed and declared safe.

• The burn must follow applicable prescribed burn plans, smoke-management guidelines, best management practices, and notification requirements.

Therefore, seeing a legal prescribed burn taking place does NOT mean that the parish-wide burn ban has been lifted or that residents are free to conduct outdoor burns.

The prescribed burns being conducted today and in the future were and will be authorized burns conducted under the applicable requirements.

For everyone else, the burn ban remains in effect.

Please do not conduct an outdoor burn simply because you see a prescribed burn taking place. If you are unsure whether a planned burn qualifies as a permitted prescribed burn, contact the appropriate authority before lighting the fire.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the tragic 9/11 events. We will always remember those citizens and first responders who died in the attacks as well as those who thankfully survived.

On this special day, our local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints honored Red River Parish first responders by providing a delicious lunch in recognition of our service.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and appreciate your thoughtfulness, your support, and the great food!

With heavy hearts, the Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office mourns the passing of Deputy Asia Pikes.

Asia was more than a valued member of our office. She was part of our Sheriff’s Office family. She truly loved serving the people of Red River Parish and took great pride in wearing the badge. Her kindness, dedication, and caring spirit touched the lives of those around her, and her absence will be deeply felt throughout our office and community.

We extend our deepest condolences to Asia’s family, friends, and coworkers during this time of tremendous sorrow. We ask that everyone keep her loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.
