September is National Preparedness Month!

This week, we’re focusing on one of the basics: building an emergency supply kit.

You don’t have to build it all at once! Start with what you already have, add a few items at a time, and make sure your kit meets the needs of everyone in your household.

Get the whole family involved. Building your kit together is a great opportunity to talk about what you might need and what to do during an emergency.

Preparedness is also about looking out for one another. Check in with family members, friends, or neighbors who may need a little extra help getting their own emergency supplies together.

Looking for more ways to prepare? Visit https://cwfire.org/community-resources/community-resources/ for additional emergency preparedness resources, including a link to Ready.gov, where you can find more information on building a kit, making a plan, and preparing for emergencies.

A little preparation now can make a big difference when an emergency happens.

🔥 A look at yesterday’s prescribed fire!

We were glad to work alongside our community partners to help safely carry out this project.

Prescribed fire can play an important role in prairie restoration, ecosystem health, and reducing hazardous vegetation.

Thanks to everyone involved in making the project possible—and for sharing some great photos from the day!

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the first responders and countless others whose courage and service defined that day.

We will never forget.

Influenza A is making an early appearance on Whidbey.

We’ve received word from our local healthcare partners that they are already seeing cases of Influenza A, along with an increase in COVID patients. While respiratory illnesses circulate every year, this is an earlier-than-usual appearance of Influenza A.

Now is a good time to take a few simple steps to help protect yourself, your family, friends, and those in our community who may be at higher risk.

🧼 Wash your hands often
🏠 Stay home when you’re sick whenever possible
🤧 Cover coughs and sneezes
😷 Consider masking when you’re sick or around someone particularly vulnerable
💉 Talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist about recommended seasonal vaccines

Taking a few simple precautions can help protect those around us, especially older adults, young children, and people at greater risk of complications from respiratory illness.
