Go get those w**ds, Girls!!!

Gerda Lerner, the historian and scholar who pioneered the field of women's history, once described how frequently girls and women's stories have been neglected in the study of history: "In my courses, the teachers told me about a world in which ostensibly one-half the human race is doing everything significant and the other half doesn’t exist. I asked myself how this checked against my own life experience. ‘This is garbage; this is not the world in which I have lived.’"

To introduce kids to pioneering women role models who changed the world, we recommend the picture book "Little Feminist: Celebrating 25 Amazing Women Throughout History" for ages 4 to 8 (https://www.amightygirl.com/little-feminist-picture-book), and the illustrated biography "HerStory: 50 Women and Girls Who Shook the World" for ages 8 to 13 (https://www.amightygirl.com/herstory)

To discover new children's books for Women's History Month, we've collected the best books on trailblazing women that have been published in the past 12 months in a new blog post, "New Mighty Girl Books for Women's History Month 2024" at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=37219

For adults seeking inspiration in the stories of Mighty Women from around the world, you can find many reading recommendations in our blog post, "The Mighty Women Reading List for Adults," at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=37136

To find many books for children and teens about famous women that we fortunately now have access to thanks to the work of Dr. Lerner and other historians, visit our "History & Biography" book section at https://www.amightygirl.com/books/history-biography

And for one of our favorite women's history-themed t-shirts, featuring Harvard professor and Pulitzer Prize winner Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's famous quote "Well behaved women seldom make history," visit https://www.amightygirl.com/well-behaved-women-history-shirt

Slowing down a bit after dark makes a big difference. When I was young the speed limit on most of Idaho's highways was 60 during daylight and 55 after dark. Not a bad idea on our more rural routes even now.

Introducing !

What do pheasants, white-tailed deer, fox squirrels, bullfrogs and chukars have in common?

They have all been introduced to the state from elsewhere. In the 1950s, deer were brought in to present more hunting opportunities for Idaho residents. The same is true of wild turkeys (1961) and game birds such as the 𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐭 (late 1800s) and chukar (1933). They have since adapted quite well and found ecological niches similar to their homelands.

While most don’t consider these to be “invasive species,” pheasants can strain their habitats because of their breeding success and population growth. Pheasants can outcompete native birds for limited resources and even be openly aggressive towards other birds. Our hunting programs help keep these amazingly colorful birds in check.

Invasive species can impact abiotic factors, biotic factors and natural cycles. This means altered fire frequency, increased soil erosion, and so much more. But where did these species come from?

Dr. Tim Prather, Professor and Senior Associate Director of Rangeland Center, talked about invasive annual grasses at the East Cascades Oak Partnership’s September 2023 quarterly meeting.

He shared that cheatgrass’s native range can be tracked back to Mediterranean climates along with a continental climate. This tells us it has adapted to a wide range of different plant communities. Field brome has a broad home range, it spans from North African through Europe and Asian. Poverty brome and red brome span across mediterranean climates. While medusahead has a wide range of habitats and ventenata spans across Mediterranean and continental climates.
