🌟 Staff Spotlight: Samantha Garcia 🌟
Day Services Coordinator | Council Bluffs

Samantha brings dedication, compassion, and a strong sense of leadership to her role every day. Her ability to connect with consumers while managing the many behind-the-scenes responsibilities makes a meaningful impact on both individuals and her team. She plays a key role in creating a supportive and positive environment for everyone she works with.

Q: If you could hang out with any cartoon character, who would it be and why?
A: “The Thornberrys, I loved that show growing up!”

Q: What inspired you to work at Vodec?
A: “I was a manager at Dairy Queen when my sister, who worked here, told me it would be a great place to work. I was recruited by Gina and started when I was 20. It was really my first ‘grown-up’ job.”

Q: What does your role involve?
A: “A lot of behind-the-scenes work that people don’t always see. It includes meetings, working on goals that best fit each individual, and yes, putting out a lot of fires. We really get to know our consumers well, which helps us deescalate situations and support them effectively.”

Q: What do you enjoy most about working in the vocational program?
A: “The interactions with our consumers. There are so many amazing people here, and you get to build relationships with all of them. We get to joke, talk about their lives, and really get to know them.”

Q: What’s something people might not realize about your job?
A: “As coordinators, we don’t always get to spend as much time with consumers as we’d like because of everything happening behind the scenes. There’s a lot to manage, and we have to prioritize our time, but we always treasure our time working directly with our consumers.”

Q: Can you share a moment when you felt especially proud of a consumer?
A: “Recently, we had a consumer who has struggled with conversations and reactions. Last week, he walked me through his morning and how he was planning his day to be more positive. He knew exactly what he needed to do, it was incredible to see that growth and progress.”

Thank you, Samantha, for your dedication, compassion, and the impact you make every day for our consumers!

Three locations, one message: inclusion matters. 💙

March was Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month; our consumers and staff came together to celebrate. We wanted to recognize the importance of inclusion, awareness, and community.

In this video, you’ll hear directly from our consumers as they share what they are most proud of and what they want others to know about them. Their voices, stories, and achievements are what this month is all about.

At Vodec, we believe everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and celebrated. 💙

Three locations, three proclamations, one family. 💙

With March being Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we are honored to have proclamations recognized across the communities we serve, Council Bluffs, Omaha, and Urbandale. These moments are more than just signatures, they represent a shared commitment to inclusion, awareness, and opportunity for individuals with developmental disabilities.

You may notice a lot of orange in our photos and that’s intentional. Orange is the official color of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, symbolizing energy, positivity, and a commitment to building a more inclusive world. Our staff and consumers proudly wore orange to show support and stand together in raising awareness.

For Vodec, these proclamations matter because they amplify the voices of our consumers and recognize the importance of creating communities where everyone is valued. They help bring awareness to both the achievements and the challenges faced by individuals with developmental disabilities, while encouraging continued advocacy and understanding.

For our consumers, this recognition is powerful. It shows that their communities see them, support them, and celebrate who they are. It reinforces that they belong and that their contributions matter.

We are proud to stand alongside our communities in recognizing Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and continuing the work toward a more inclusive future for all.

Thank you to our local leaders for helping make this recognition possible.

✨ Creativity in Action at Urbandale! ✨

We had a wonderful time at our Urbandale location welcoming Unwind Designs, who brought in a variety of custom diamond art kits for our consumers to enjoy. From keychains and sunglasses to creating diamond art on their own drawings, there were so many fun and creative options to explore.

One of the most exciting parts of the visit was learning about the accessible tools Unwind Designs has developed to help make diamond art projects easier and more enjoyable for everyone. These tools help ensure that more people can participate, express their creativity, and experience the pride that comes from completing a project.

Thank you to Unwind Designs for sharing your creativity, innovation, and time with our consumers. Experiences like this help create meaningful opportunities for artistic expression, focus, and confidence building.

🎨 We loved seeing everyone’s creativity shine!
