Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management Expands Collaborative Fuels Reduction Project on the Prescott National Forest

Chino Valley, AZ (6/5/2026) – As critical fuels reduction work continues southwest of Cottonwood, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management along with the Prescott National Forest have identified another important piece of treatment area as part of the Christina Goodard fuels reduction project.

Last month, work started on the 603-acre project, west of Blue Ranch and east of the Quail Springs Neighborhood, via the Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) agreement with the US Forest Service. Those acres have been successfully treated with mastication work and due to the pace of work, another 759 acres will now be targeted with mastication work around the Quail Springs neighborhood. The Christina Goodard thinning project was developed to reduce the risk and severity of wildfire to Cottonwood and Clarkdale, as well as the Verde River Watershed. The mastication work strategically aligns the fuel bed to slow the spread of fire and reduce intensity, allowing firefighters easier access to conduct suppression work. The work also improves the health of the forest and the wildlife habitat.

The project should be completed in the next few months, pending weather or fire restrictions delays. Residents in the area may see machinery operating near Forest Service Road 9710E, but no road closures are planned.

The Good Neighbor Authority involves collaboration between the USFS and DFFM to perform critical fuels management work on US Forest Service lands. This partnership is designed to improve forest health and productivity by utilizing state resources to accomplish shared conservation goals across land ownership boundaries.

Today marks the end of an incredible chapter as Engineer Jeremy Doerksen completes his final shift in the fire service.

Engineer Doerksen’s journey began in 1999 as a volunteer with CFD, followed by his hiring with Camp Verde Fire District in 2002, and ultimately joining CFD in 2009. Over the years, he has dedicated himself to serving our community with an unwavering commitment to helping others.

Making this day even more special, Engineer Doerksen is spending his last day on duty alongside family who share his passion for the fire service. His father, retired Chief Jerry Doerksen, and his nephew, Firefighter Sterling Doerksen, are both at the station with him as he closes out a remarkable career.

Engineer Doerksen’s impact on this department extends far beyond emergency responses. He has been a trusted crew member, mentor, teacher and friend whose knowledge, leadership, and dedication have helped shape those around him. The legacy he leaves behind will continue to be felt for years to come.

Jeremy, on behalf of the entire Cottonwood Fire Department, thank you, for your many years of faithful service to the public and to the fire service profession. Your commitment has made our communities safer and our department stronger.

As you begin this next chapter, we wish you a retirement filled with good health, adventure, laughter, and countless opportunities to enjoy time with family and friends. May the years ahead bring you the same fulfillment and joy that you have brought to so many throughout your career.

Congratulations on your retirement and thank you for a job well done.

From Arizona to Romania 🇺🇸🇷🇴
Firefighter Matt Moldovan recently had the opportunity to visit the fire academy in Rădăuți, Romania, where he worked alongside the next generation of firefighters. During his visit, FF Moldovan suited up to demonstrate down firefighter drills, search and rescue techniques, fire attack evolutions, and participated in a workout skills course.
We are proud to see FF Moldovan representing us internationally and sharing knowledge, teamwork, and the fire service brotherhood across borders. Thank you for making our department and community proud!!

Yesterday afternoon, E412, T411, E416 and aid from Verde Valley FD responded to a brush fire near multiple structures.

Thanks to quick action and coordinated efforts, the fire was contained before it could spread further.

This incident is a reminder that wildland fire season is here. As temperatures rise and vegetation dries out, even a small spark can quickly spread. Please help keep our community safe by using caution outdoors and reporting smoke or fire immediately.

Never leave a child in a vehicle unattended for any length of time. Rolling windows down or parking in the shade does little to change the interior temperature of the vehicle.

If you see a child alone in a locked car, act immediately and call 911. A child in distress due to heat should be removed from the vehicle as quickly as possible and rapidly cooled.
