Dear USD 284 Families, Students, Staff, and Community Members,

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I share the tragic news that one of our third-grade students, Wade Bartels, passed away last night.

There are simply no words that can adequately express the heartbreak we feel for Wade’s family, friends, classmates, teachers, and all those whose lives were touched by him. This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Wade’s family as they face a tragedy no family should ever have to endure.

During this incredibly difficult time, I ask that we all respect the privacy of Wade’s family and give them the time and space they need to grieve and process this heartbreaking loss.

USD 284 is more than a school district—we are a Bulldog family. When one member of our family hurts, we all hurt. And in the days and weeks ahead, we will do what Bulldog families do: we will wrap our arms around one another, lift each other up, and walk through this tragedy together.

The district will have counselors and additional support services available for students and staff who may need someone to talk with or simply a safe place to process their emotions. Grief affects everyone differently, and we encourage our students and staff to reach out whenever they need support.

Please keep Wade’s family, his classmates, his teachers, and everyone who loved and cared for him in your thoughts during the difficult days ahead.

We are Bulldog Strong. Not because we never experience heartbreak, but because when heartbreak comes, we stand together. We support one another. We care for one another. And we make sure no one walks through the darkness alone.

Today, and in the days ahead, may we surround Wade’s family and one another with love, compassion, patience, and grace.

With a heavy heart,

Dr. Aron Dody
Superintendent of Schools

USD 284 would like to extend a sincere THANK YOU to the Pendergraft Foundation and The Kaltenbacher Charitable Trust for their incredible generosity in providing the funding for new scoreboards at the CCJSHS gymnasium and Ron Mayo Field.

No school district funds were used to purchase the new scoreboards.

The scoreboards in the CCJSHS gymnasium were more than 35 years old, and replacement parts were no longer available for repairs. In addition, new Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) regulations require shot clocks beginning with the 2026–2027 season. With those changes, it made sense to replace our aging scoreboards with current technology that integrates with the new shot clocks.

The football scoreboard was approximately 15 years old and still functional, but it needed minor repairs and repainting. Through this project, we were able to package the football scoreboard replacement with the gymnasium upgrades, allowing us to update the technology at both facilities at the same time with the same brand of scoreboards.

An additional benefit of having the same brand and technology at both locations is greater flexibility and redundancy with our scoreboard controllers. If we experience a controller issue at one location, we will now have multiple compatible controllers available as backups.

These improvements will benefit our students, coaches, fans, and community for many years to come.

Chase County and USD 284 are incredibly fortunate to have organizations like the Pendergraft Foundation and The Kaltenbacher Charitable Trust that continue to invest in our students and our community. Projects like this are possible because of organizations that believe in supporting opportunities for our kids.

THANK YOU, Pendergraft Foundation and The Kaltenbacher Charitable Trust, for your generosity and continued support of USD 284!

What a great day for these students at the ESU Steps to Success event for juniors!

This college visit opportunity gives students a firsthand look at all that Emporia State University has to offer. They toured the dorms, explored campus, heard from current ESU students, and got a glimpse into what college life could look like for them.

We’re so glad they had the chance to experience ESU and all it has to offer!
