PERSONAL PROPERTY

WHAT IS TANGIBLE PERSONAL PROPERTY: Personal property is “…every tangible thing which is the subject of ownership, not forming
part or parcel of real property.” [K.S.A. 79-102]

The distinguishing characteristic of personal property is the ability to move it without damage to itself or to the real property to which it may be attached.

Personal property includes mobile homes, tiny homes, vehicles with heavy tags, oil and gas leases and more. This is not an all inclusive list.

In Kansas, Personal Property taxes become due on November 1st each year. A two-payment option is available. If the first-half taxes are paid by December 20th, the second-half payment is due May 10th of the following year.

The Chase County Treasurer mails Personal Property tax statements in early November to the address of record.

Unpaid delinquent personal property tax will keep you from renewing your vehicle tags until your account is current.

All delinquent personal property owners will be served a Sheriff warrant if personal property tax is not paid by August 1.

All delinquent personal property owners will be advertised in a local publication three weeks in October.

Tax payments may be made in the Chase County Treasurer's Office, 300 Pearl, or may be mailed to Chase County Treasurer, P.O. Box 529, Cottonwood Falls, KS 66845.

Kansas REAL ESTATE Tax Delinquency Timeline

Understanding the milestones helps avoid mounting fees and property seizure:

November 1: Real estate taxes become due.

December 20: Deadline to pay the first half without penalty.

December 21: If the first half is unpaid, interest begins to accrue daily on that portion.

May 10: Deadline to pay the second half without penalty. After this date, the full amount and accrued interest must be paid.

August 1: Unpaid taxes are subject to advertising/publication fees and will be listed in the official county newspaper.

September (First Tuesday): Delinquent taxes are placed on the delinquent tax roll, attaching a lien to the real estate

Once a lien goes into effect in September, Kansas statute initiates a holding period before the county can take legal action. Properties that remain delinquent for three years (two years for vacant land or commercial properties) are forwarded to the county's legal or attorney's department for foreclosure suits. Ultimately, these properties may be sold at public tax foreclosure auctions, and individuals with existing delinquent taxes are typically barred from bidding

[ K.S.A. 79-2301 to 79-2323a.]

As you may know, each year businesses remit abandoned property to the State Treasurers Office (STO). Types of property include bank accounts, wages, stocks, dividends, and utility deposits. It is the county treasurer to reunite the people of Kansas with their unclaimed financial assets.
Our office recently received the Chase County Kansas Unclaimed Property List. We will try to reach out to some of you if we have contact information. Of course you can always access this information online at www.kansascash.ks.gov or by calling the Unclaimed Property Division at 785-296-4165. It is definitely worth taking a look.
