Good morning Chase County!

Starting next Thursday, September 17th, paving work is expected to begin on K-177. They are planning to start near Hwy-50 and work south toward Cassoday. It is expected to take around 45 days to complete.

As we understand it, crews will work on one side of the road for a distance, and then circle back to the other side of the road. This will allow them to complete sections of the road as they go.

Please expect delays and slower traffic while crews are working. Give yourself a little extra time, be patient and stay alert while traveling through the work zones.

We’re excited to see our roads get some much needed improvements!

Some days become a part of our history. Others become a part of who we are. 🇺🇸

8:46am- American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower.
9:03am- United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower.
9:37am- American Airlines Flight 77 struck the pentagon.
10:03am- United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

September 11,2001. A day many of us will never forget. We remember where we were, who we were with, and the moment we realized something unimaginable was happening. We remember the fear, the heartbreak, the uncertainty- and then, in the days that followed, the incredible sense of unity and strength that broke but brought our country together.

Today, we remember the 2,977 lives lost, the families who were forever changed, and the brave first responders who ran toward danger to help others. We honor their courage, their sacrifice, and the countless people whose lives were changed that day.

25 years later, we still remember. We still honor. We still never forget.

We had a special delivery today from Love in Action. These goodie bags are for both The Sheriff’s Office and Detention Centers staff! We are so thankful for Kay and everything she does!

Love In Action was formed by Kay Krause in July 2025 to support the 120 ICE detainees and the other 28 detainees being held at the Chase County Detention Center at the time.

Through compassion, encouragement, and practical support, Love In Action helps detainees stay connected while providing resources that bring comfort and hope.

Happy Labor Day Chase County!

We were soaking up some family time this weekend, so our weekly recap is a little late. But hey, better late than never! 😉 We had another busy week, so here are a few reminders:

🔥 Controlled Burns: Controlled burns are not advised when wind speeds or gusts are above 15–20 MPH. Unless otherwise advised by the Fire Chief, Dispatch is required to advise against burning under these conditions.
🔥 Accurate Information Matters: When calling in a controlled burn, please provide the most accurate information possible, including the closest intersection, landowner’s name, and caller’s name. This information is especially important if a controlled burn becomes uncontrolled and emergency responders need to locate the area quickly.

🎆 Football Game Fireworks: Fireworks will be set off during home football games. We promise, nothing is blowing up… and if it is, we’ll be on it. 😂 If you ever have a concern or see something that doesn’t look right, don’t hesitate to reach out!

If you were the mystery delivery person, please know that we greatly appreciate the time you took out of your day to make these, and drop them off for us. It’s always a nice surprise to see in the morning!

☀️ Good morning Chase County, and Happy Sunday Funday!! ☀️

Lots of traffic stops this week! 🚔 Thank you to our law enforcement officers for cracking down on speeders and reckless drivers and helping keep our roads safe!

And while you’re out enjoying the sunshine today, don’t have too much fun in the heat! 😎🌞 The National Weather Service advises that there is high grassland fire danger currently AND heat indices near 105 are expected this afternoon. So, remember to stay cool and hydrated!

Don’t Forget!
🚧 K-177 will be closed Thursday, September 3rd, about ½ mile south of Cottonwood Falls, from 7:00 AM–6:00 PM while KDOT replaces a culvert. Please plan accordingly!
🎆 Friday Night Lights & Fireworks: USD 284 will be setting off fireworks during the home football games! 🏈🎆 So if you hear some unexpected BOOMs, don’t worry — it’s just a little extra Friday night excitement!

Members of our Detention Center staff attended JailCon 2026 last week, where Lieutenant Fleshman received the Dedication to Excellence Award! 🏆

Lieutenant Fleshman consistently looks for ways to get our Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center staff involved in projects and activities throughout our community. Her dedication to our mission, our employees, and the people we serve truly makes her stand out.

The Dedication to Excellence Award (or, what it should be called, the “needs a completely paid-for extended vacation” award) is presented to an employee who has demonstrated exceptional dedication over the past year and gone above and beyond normal expectations.

Through extraordinary efforts, including working additional hours and prioritizing the safety and security of staff, inmates, and our community, this individual has made a significant impact and exemplified the highest standards of professionalism in corrections.

Congratulations, Lieutenant Denna Fleshman! 👏💙

We are so lucky to have you on our team and appreciate everything you do for our staff and our community!

🚨 Attention Chase County! 🚨

KDOT will be closing K-177 approximately ½ mile south of Cottonwood Falls, next Thursday September 3rd, 2026.

⏰ Closure time: 7:00 AM–6:00 PM.

The closure is necessary for crews to replace a culvert.

Please plan accordingly and use an alternate route if needed. We appreciate everyone’s patience while this work is completed! 🚧
