👮‍♂️🤝 An Open Message About Supporting Our Police Officers

When a social media post involves the Cottleville Police Department - whether it concerns a traffic ticket, electric bikes, parking, or any enforcement matter - critical comments often appear almost immediately.

Residents (and visitors) have every right to ask questions, share concerns and seek clarification. If someone believes an officer acted improperly, the best path is to contact the Police Department or the appropriate city official so the matter can be reviewed fairly; with full context.

What does not help is adding personal attacks, repeating unverified claims, or using a single incident to criticize Cottleville officers as a group. Those comments can make it harder to understand the original concern and can turn a legitimate question into an unnecessary noice.

Our police officers handle difficult situations every day. They enforce laws, respond to calls, assist residents, manage traffic and public safety concerns, and work to protect the community. They should be held accountable when concerns are substantiated, but they also deserve fairness, respect and the opportunity to explain what occurred.

📞 For those who comment because they genuinely want to help, I invite you to contact me directly. If you have a concern about our police team or believe a process should be improved, please reach out to me - not to criticize individual staff members in a public comment thread, but to have a constructive conversation about the issue and possible solutions.

⚖️ Before commenting, please consider the purpose of the comment:
Will it help resolve the concern?
Is it based on verified information?
Does it treat the people involved fairly?
Does it direct the resident toward a resource that can actually help?

🏘️ Questions and good-faith criticism have a place in our community. Personal attacks, speculation and comments intended to inflame a situation do not solve problems.

We can support accountability while also supporting the men and women who serve our community. Let’s approach these conversations with facts, fairness and a genuine interest in making our community better.

After hours at Northwestern Mutual, keynote speaker our own John McDaris!

Sergeant First Class Johnathon McDaris is an Army veteran and infantryman who served with the 101st Airborne Division. In 2006, he was wounded in action by an IED, yet his story did not end with injury—it continued with courage, service and purpose. His example later helped inspire the effort to have Cottleville designated as a Purple Heart City. Despite being featured in numerous media outlets and interviews, he has always remained grounded, gracious and focused on serving others. Today, he continues that commitment as a member of Cottleville’s newly formed Veterans Advisory Committee. A soldier is always a soldier; and a servant leader is always an inspiration.

For years, Jo has shown what determination, hard work and a strong connection to the community can accomplish. Her warm spirit have made Jo’s 5th Street Pub a familiar gathering place for generations of residents.

🏛️ Historic Walking Tour

Join us this evening for a relaxed walking tour—through historic downtown Cottleville.

🚶 Cottleville Historian Sheriff Scott Lewis will lead the evening as we stroll along the replica wood-plank sidewalks and talk about the people and places that shaped our community. We’ll visit several downtown stops while sharing stories from Cottleville’s earliest log-cabin settlers to the covered wagons that passed through town on the route west.

We’ll begin at 5:00 p.m. and wrap up around 7:00-ish. Feel free to join us for the full walk or meet us along the way as your schedule allows.

🕔 Tentative schedule:
5:00 p.m. — Jo's 5th St Pub
5:30 p.m. — Plank Road Pizza
6:00 p.m. — Oak Street Inn
Walk-by of the Bross Brothers Log Cabin
6:30 p.m. — Frankie Martin's Garden

Fun Facts & Stories:

🌿 Jo’s Fifth Street Pub
During the 1860s, Cottleville was home to four churches: Southern Methodist, Catholic, German Evangelical, and African Baptist. A portion of today’s Mannino’s Market and the lower level of Jo’s Fifth Street Pub was originally Phillips Hall at St. John’s United Church of Christ. In the attached historic photograph, the hall appears on the right. St. John’s built a new church in Weldon Spring in 1980. The Knights of Columbus later purchased the property and used it for a banquet hall and lower-level club room until building a new facility farther west on Highway N. Mannino’s Market and Jo’s Fifth Street Pub recently celebrated 28 years in business.

🌿 Plank Road Pizza
This building may have been constructed in the 1860s by Frederick Valentine. Newspaper articles from the early 1870s mention both Valentine and Valentine’s Store, although it is unclear whether this location served as both the store and family residence or only as the residence. Plank Road Pizza takes its name from the Western Plank Road—a privately operated toll road built in 1854 along Boone’s Lick Road between Cottleville and St. Charles. The toll was two bits, or 25 cents. The road was constructed with wooden planks but lasted only about 13 years. Rotting and warped boards made it difficult to maintain and some planks were reportedly taken for firewood and barn construction.

🌿 Oak Street Inn
Buildings at this location once housed a general store and post office on the lower level, with hotel rooms upstairs. Oak Street Inn displays several historic photographs in its dining room.

🌿 Bross Brothers Cabin
When Warren Cottle returned in 1799, he brought approximately 100 family members and friends with him. The group constructed a number of log cabins, and this may be one of them. Bernard Bross and his older brother emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1881 and settled in Cottleville. They operated a blacksmith and wagon-repair shop in the shed next to their home.

🌿 Frankie Martin’s Garden
This home was built around the 1850s by German immigrant Philip Mueller, a shoemaker. In the 1870s, the property was sold to another German immigrant, August Hermann, who worked as a blacksmith and made and repaired horse tack. Frankie Martin, who lived from 1945 to 2020, was born and raised in this house. He later raised cattle on his farm for many years.

On this date in 1972, Bobby Fischer (American chess prodigy) defeated Boris Vasilyevich Spassky (holding the title from 1969 to 1972) to become world chess champion (it was a highly visible Cold War contest then; ending Soviet dominance). In 1979, NASA’s Pioneer 11 made the first spacecraft flyby of Saturn. And in 1985, the wreckage of the Titanic was located in the North Atlantic.
