The circular firing squad of Democratic public policy continues in today’s episode of the job-crushing, taxpayer-funded killing, episode of the Owls. As many of us in logging communities know, the listing of the Spotted Owl on the Endangered Species List effectively turned many of our small communities into ghost towns overnight. Today, those economy-crushing conservation efforts to revive the Spotted Owls’ numbers have failed - cataclysmically - and not because we continued to log like we used to (we couldn’t). But, rather, because nature did want nature does, whether we like it or not. It breeds, it evolves, and it creates new species. In our case, after losing hundreds of saw mills in the last 30 years, and tens of thousands of jobs, the Barred Owl, driven by hormonal instinct, continues to relentlessly breed with the Spotted Owl, resulting in the creation of the “Sparred Owl,” and at great numbers. It was purely and simply a natural shift in the species. That’s not crazy, that’s nature. But you know what is crazy? Killing jobs, industry, and communities. But that’s not even the craziest part about this boondoggle. There is now a government proposal to spend an estimated $1.35 BILLION. Yes, BILLION, with a “B” to hire government employees to hunt the Barred Owl to give the Spotted Owls a chance of resurgence.

Sadly, you can’t make this stuff up. Sadly, we continue to quip about not having enough taxpayer funds to pay for the things we do need like paved roads, bridges, wildfire response, and more. I think it’s safe to say that, when people are actually considering spending billions on killing owls and not the everyday needs of the taxpayers, we’ve got our priorities screwed up.

I am very grateful to ORCOPS for their support. This endorsement is of particular importance to me. I have nothing but respect and appreciation for the men and women of law enforcement. Without fail, they work around the clock to keep our state safe. It is my opinion that, in the past few years, law enforcement hasn’t gotten the support they deserve. Our law enforcement officers have the difficult task of preventing the disaster before it happens. That means tough conversations and accountability for us, the citizens. But they are the ones preventing bad outcomes with their proactive policing, and showing up to save us after a disaster or threat has been brought to bear. This is yeoman’s work, and I look forward to supporting law enforcement officers in the Legislature, just as they support us everyday. ORCOPS

Well, I never thought I’d say this, but I just got out of prison. No, not the way you’re thinking…

I had the opportunity to compete in a 5k run with some of the inmates in the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem. I was invited by a small group of “outside” athletes who go every month to offer support for the program, and provide some outside competition, camaraderie, and prayer. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was a humbling reminder about the life-changing consequences of bad decisions, accountability, rehabilitation, and redemption.

Running through the yard, I had lots of time to speak with some of these guys. There was a common narrative among many of them: acceptance of things, sadness, and an understanding and acceptance of being held to account. But there also seemed to be a genuine desire to make use of the time by getting educated and licensed, get out, and be free.

Our assigned Correctional Officer was an awesome guy who I had the chance to speak with, also. He was clearly cut out for the job. He was understanding and willing to work with the inmates, but also didn’t take any guff - he was a complete and total professional, despite doing a really tough job. My hat’s off to him.

I am grateful to Derek for the invite. I’ll be going back for the softball tournament when they have an opening.

To the Oregon State Penitentiary inmates who are allowed to run and race, it’s much more than a metaphor.

With a record-breaking 2 million acres burned in the 2026 wildfire season so far, it's time to rethink the status quo, and start managing our forests. Too many overreaching environmental regulations greatly restrict our ability to profitably harvest and properly manage our forests.

Nebraska grows corn, Oregon grows Doug Fir. The only difference is that Nebraska regularly and routinely harvests corn. Oregon does not, and at no fault of the men and women who profit from and steward our timberlands.

Will we wake up any time soon? Will we realize that we can harvest more, profit more, create more jobs, fund our schools and infrastructure more, store more carbon in new wood-framed homes, furniture, and other goods, as opposed to watching these benefits literally burn up, causing widespread econimic damage, out-of-control insurance costs, and smoke-tainted crops?

My prayers go out to the people, farmers, ranchers, and businesses impacted by these fires. I hope the politicians hear you and get serious about forest management.

IP-28 failed to qualify for the November ballot! Looks like Oregon will keep shooting, casting, raising and harvesting!
