ABLE Airborne Law Enforcement ABLE was closed on 06-30-2011. This site is now in memory of the unit that supplied service for 41 years A.B.L.E.

provided air-support service to the cities of Newport Beach, Costa Mesa & Santa Ana seven days a week, three hundred and sixty-five days a year. patrolled a diverse area which includes commercial and residential areas, a state park, a harbor that is one of the nations busiest for small craft and 10 miles of coastline.

Costa Mesa Police Officers Mike Libolt and Dave Ketchum were killed when their helicopter was involved in a midair collision with Newport Beach Police Department's helicopter while providing air support to a vehicle pursuit along MacArthur Boulevard. Costa Mesa's Hughes 500E crashed just south of the UC Irvine campus. Newport Beach's helicopter was able to make an emergency landing. (Via ODMP)
