Donโ€™t think one person can make a difference? Try telling that to the 1,000 elementary students who showed up for our coastline at Kids Ocean Day OC last week!

Together, they sent a powerful message: that the ocean belongs to all of us, and protecting it takes everyone. ๐ŸŒŠ

Kids Ocean Day OC is around the corner, and we can't wait!

This annual celebration brings over 1,000 OC elementary school students to the beach for a day they'll never forget. It's part field trip, part call-to-action, and all about building a connection to our ocean.

Through hands-on activities, students learn how pollution impacts our beaches and waterways. More importantly, they see how their individual actions can make a real difference.

Sponsored by , Kids Ocean Day events are hosted throughout the state by different organizations. OC Coastkeeper has proudly coordinated Kids Ocean Day OC since 2008.

Shout out to the statewide Kids Ocean Day team! .

We simply could not run our Living Shorelines programs without the help of our amazing restaurant partners! ๐Ÿ‘

Shells for Shorelines is an oyster recycling program that takes donated oyster shells from restaurants and reuses them to grow native oyster populations in Southern California. Repurposing oyster shells is a long-standing restoration practice rooted in Indigenous coastal stewardship.

This initiative helps reduce food waste, lower program costs, and engage the local community in marine science projects.

We believe everyone should have access to California's beautiful coastline. But for many, access isn't guaranteed.

One of the biggest barriers is physical. Our coastline can be difficult to navigate, especially for people with disabilities, reduced mobility, or older adults. Long stretches of sand, uneven terrain, and rocky shorelines can limit who gets to fully experience the coast. At the same time, we have a responsibility to protect these natural spaces and avoid permanent alterations.

Temporary accessibility equipment, such as beach wheelchairs, walkers, access mats, and adaptive kayaks, can make a meaningful difference. These tools help people connect with the coast in ways that wouldn't otherwise be possible, without disrupting the landscape.

Through our Beach and Coast Accessibility Program, in partnership with the California State Coastal Conservancy, we provide grants to California tribes, nonprofits, and public agencies. These funds go directly toward purchasing, maintaining, and promoting accessibility equipment.

This is just one way we're working to make the coast more accessible, and we know there's more to do. If you have ideas for how we can expand this work or want to support it, we'd love to connect. ๐Ÿงก

Itโ€™s just a beach day โ€ฆ until itโ€™s not. ๐Ÿ‘€

Kids Ocean Day brings thousands of students to the coast, many for the very first time! Itโ€™s where connection starts, and where future ocean advocates are made. ๐ŸŒŠ

But it only happens with support.

Buses, resources, and access all depend on funding.

We're getting ready for oyster recruitment season. ๐Ÿฆช

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped us create shell strings, or as we like to call them, "oyster condos!" Shell strings act as underwater nurseries for baby Olympia oysters, helping larvae settle and grow, eventually replenishing our native oyster beds.

Visit our website to learn about how we use native oyster restoration in Long Beach, Seal Beach, and Newport Beach to stabilize shorelines and restore marine ecosystems. ๐Ÿ’™

We're excited to join the Modern Makers Mart at the Festival of Whales this Sunday, March 8! Our marine restoration team has prepared several handmade goodies using recycled oyster shells from local restaurant partners. All proceeds from the event will benefit our marine restoration program. ๐Ÿฆช๐Ÿ’™

pH is one of the simplest and most effective ways our team checks local water quality. Healthy, flowing waterways typically fall between 6.5 and 8.5; anything outside that range can put wildlife and ecosystems at risk.

We use pH monitoring in two key ways: tracking stormwater runoff from industrial sites to ensure compliance with water quality laws, and leading hands-on science labs with Orange County students through our free education programs.

Keeping our testing equipment calibrated and ready means we can trust the data and continue to protect swimmable, drinkable, fishable water for all!
